Chapter 7 - The Dawn of the EstateSpring finally arrived in Chicago, bursting through the frozen winter landscape with vibrant green shoots, blooming cherry blossoms, and warm sunlight flooding through the tall windows of the Cross estate.

The dark, oppressive gloom that had hung over the mansion for five long years had completely lifted, replaced by a quiet, steady warmth that radiated from the inside out.
I was no longer just the live-in maid running away from a desperate past. I was a partner, an equal, and the heart that kept the entire household anchored.
One Saturday afternoon, as I stood on the back stone patio watering the newly planted flower beds, heavy footsteps approached from behind.
An arm wrapped securely around my waist, pulling me backward against a broad, familiar chest, while a warm chin rested comfortably on my shoulder.
“You’re going to drown those tulips if you aren't careful,” Adrian teased softly, a low, rich chuckle vibrating against my back.
I turned around in his arms, smiling as I rested my hands against the lapels of his casual linen shirt. The harsh, terrifying mafia boss who had once looked down his nose at me in the marble foyer was entirely gone, replaced by a man who looked at me like I was his entire world.
“Let them grow, Adrian,” I laughed lightly. “Things need water to bloom.”
He smiled, his gray eyes shining with deep, unshakeable devotion. He leaned down, capturing my lips in a slow, lingering kiss that tasted of spring, coffee, and absolute peace.
When we broke apart, he rested his forehead against mine, his thumb brushing my cheek.
“Mrs. Gable asked me what our plans are for the summer,” Adrian murmured quietly.
“And what did you tell her?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.
“I told her that the live-in maid is getting a promotion,” Adrian smiled, his voice dropping into a husky whisper. “I told her she’s moving into the master suite permanently as the mistress of this house... if she’ll have me.”
My heart soared. I wrapped my arms tightly around his neck, pulling him down for another deep, passionate kiss.
Three months earlier, I had dragged a nearly two-hundred-pound mafia boss through a freezing whiteout blizzard, risking my own life to save a man who had initially wanted me gone. I had thought I was just doing my job.

Instead, I had found my home.
The winter storm was a distant memory. The ghosts of the past were finally laid to rest. And looking out over the sun-drenched gardens of the estate, I knew that whatever came next, we would face it together—unbroken, unafraid, and fiercely alive.
