Chapter 3 - Waking the Sleeping QueenBy 3:00 a.m., the VIP suite at City General Hospital was dead quiet, save for the rhythmic, mechanical hiss of the oxygen ventilator and the steady beep-beep-beep of the fetal heart monitor.

Daniel sat in a plastic chair beside the hospital bed, his fingers intertwined with Clara’s limp, pale hand. Her skin was finally warming up, the bluish tint fading from her lips, replaced by a soft, natural pink.
The door clicked open softly.
Dr. Emily Hayes, the chief OB-GYN on duty, stepped into the room holding a glowing clipboard. She looked at Daniel with a tired, compassionate smile.
“Her vitals are stabilizing, Daniel,” Dr. Hayes whispered, pulling up a chair beside him. “The paralytic has cleared almost entirely from her muscular junctions. The baby’s heartbeat is strong—robust, actually. Considering what she went through, it’s nothing short of a biological miracle.”
Daniel let out a long, shuddering breath, bowing his head as a wave of overwhelming relief washed over him. “When will she wake up?”
“Any time now,” Dr. Hayes replied, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. “Her brain activity has normalized. But I need to warn you, Daniel... when she wakes up, she’s going to be disoriented, terrified, and emotionally traumatized. She’ll remember being trapped inside her own body while they prepared her for... well, you know.”
Daniel gripped Clara’s hand tighter. “I’ll be right here. I’m not leaving her side.”
As if responding to his voice, Clara’s eyelids fluttered.
A faint, soft moan escaped her lips. Her fingers twitched inside Daniel’s grip.
“Clara?” Daniel leaned in close, brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from her damp forehead. “Clara, can you hear me?”
Her eyelashes trembled again, lifting slowly to reveal hazel eyes that were hazy, wide with terror, and searching the unfamiliar white ceiling of the hospital room.
“D-Daniel...?” Her voice was a dry, raspy whisper, barely audible over the hum of the monitors.
“I’m here, baby. I’m right here,” he choked out, kissing her knuckles repeatedly. “You’re safe. You’re at City General. The baby is fine. Everything is fine.”
Clara’s eyes locked onto his, and suddenly, the horror of what had happened rushed back into her memory. Her entire body spasmed with violent panic. She tried to sit up, gasping for air, her hands clawing desperately at the hospital sheets.
“Mom...!” Clara sobbed, tears spilling down her cheeks. “Mom and Marcus... they... they put something in my tea... I couldn't move... I couldn't scream... I tried to tell them I was awake, but my mouth wouldn't work... they put me in the box, Daniel... they were going to burn me...”
“Shh, shh, shh,” Daniel murmured frantically, pulling her upper body into his arms, holding her tightly against his chest as she wept uncontrollably. “I know, sweetheart. I know. I stopped them. They’re arrested. Helena and Marcus are both in federal custody right now. No one is ever going to hurt you again.”
Clara buried her face in his shoulder, her small frame shaking with sobs of release and residual terror. “My baby... is our baby okay?”
“Listen,” Daniel said gently, pulling back just enough to place her hand over her still-swollen belly, where the steady kick of their child pulsed reassuringly against her palm. “Feel that? Our baby is fighting just as hard as you are.”
Clara closed her eyes, a shaky breath escaping her lips as she felt the movement. For the first time since the nightmare began, the hunted, terrified look in her eyes softened into a fierce, protective light.
“They tried to murder us,” Clara whispered, her voice hardening with cold, steely resolve. “My own mother tried to murder her own daughter and grandchild.”
“They thought we were weak because we didn't come from money,” Daniel said, his jaw tightening as he kissed her forehead. “They thought they could sweep us under the rug. But they made one fatal mistake.”

“What’s that?” Clara asked, looking up at him.
“They forgot who they were dealing with.”
