Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a BetrayalThe interrogation room at the downtown precinct smelled of cheap disinfectant and stale coffee. Outside the double-sided glass, the rain had turned into a torrential downpour, beating against the reinforced windows like a drumroll of impending doom.

Clara was currently two floors up in the intensive care unit of City General Hospital, hooked to state-of-the-art life support. The medical team had successfully flushed the massive dose of pancuronium bromide—a powerful neuromuscular blocker—from her bloodstream. Her heart rate was stabilizing, and the fetal monitor confirmed that the baby, though stressed, was still clinging stubbornly to life.

Daniel sat at the metal table in the interrogation room, his shirtsleeves rolled up, his knuckles bruised where he had slammed them against the crematorium wall earlier.

Across from him sat Marcus Vale, handcuffed to the bolted-down chair. Gone was the arrogant, untouchable swagger of the wealthy heir. In its place was a sweating, shivering coward who kept glancing nervously at the recording camera in the corner.

“You can’t hold me here, Daniel,” Marcus muttered, his voice trembling. “My lawyer will have me out by morning. You have no proof of anything. The doctor signed the papers. It was a tragic medical accident—”

“An accident,” Daniel repeated calmly. He slid a single manila folder across the metal table.

Marcus stared at it warily.

“Open it, Marcus,” Daniel said softly.

Marcus hesitated, then used his cuffed hands to fumble open the folder. Inside were printed transcripts of encrypted text messages pulled directly from his personal phone by federal cyber-investigators less than an hour ago.

‘Is the dosage enough to last through the transport?’ — Sent from Marcus to Dr. Crane at 8:00 a.m. yesterday.

‘Double it. If she wakes up during the private clinic transfer, the coroner will start asking questions,’ — Reply from Dr. Crane.

‘Make sure the cremation is before sunset. Mother’s trust disbursement clears tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m.,’ — Marcus’s final message.

Marcus’s face drained of every remaining drop of color. He looked up, his eyes wide with sheer panic. “This... this was obtained illegally! It’s a violation of privacy! You hacked my phone—”

“I didn't hack anything,” Daniel interrupted, leaning forward so the overhead fluorescent light cast harsh shadows across his sharp jawline. “A federal warrant signed by a U.S. magistrate judge did. You left your cloud backup connected to the family server, Marcus. You lawyers are always so smart until you actually have to commit a real crime.”

Marcus slumped back in his chair, his lower lip quivering. “Mom... Mom planned it. She said Clara marrying an outsider, a nobody mechanic, was an insult to the family name. She said the baby would dilute the trust. She told me if we got the estate back, she’d buy me that stake in the Boston shipping ports...”

“You traded your sister’s life—and your niece or nephew’s life—for a shipping port?” Daniel asked, his voice dropping into a register so cold it felt like liquid nitrogen.

“She was going to die anyway!” Marcus snapped defensively, his voice cracking. “The pregnancy was high-risk! Dr. Crane said she might not survive the delivery! We just... accelerated the timeline!”

Daniel stood up so fast his metal chair screeched loudly against the linoleum floor. Before Marcus could flinch, Daniel reached across the table, grabbed Marcus by the collar of his expensive designer shirt, and hauled him halfway across the table until their noses were inches apart.

“Listen to me very carefully,” Daniel whispered, his voice shaking with a suppressed fury that terrified Marcus down to his soul. “If Clara or my baby doesn't walk out of that hospital... I won't let the courts touch you. I will personally take you apart piece by piece, starting with your hands.”

The heavy steel door of the interrogation room swung open instantly.

“Daniel! Stop!” Agent Caleb Vance stepped in, grabbing his brother’s shoulder and pulling him back. “Step away from him. Let the system do its job. We’ve got Helena in custody downstairs. The whole house of cards is collapsing.”

Daniel took a deep, shuddering breath, smoothing down his sleeves as he released Marcus, who collapsed back into his chair, gasping for air.

“Keep him locked down,” Daniel told his brother without looking back. “I’m going back to the hospital.”
