Chapter 6 - The Velvet Trap

The fallout from Celeste’s public meltdown was swift and merciless. Within twenty-four hours, Moreau Global’s remaining credit lines were completely frozen by DeLuca Holdings, and Arthur Moreau formally announced his retirement from the board of directors, quietly relocating his family out of state.
By the following Tuesday, the storm had finally cleared, leaving behind a strange, unfamiliar quiet in our lives.
We were sitting in the private library of Roman’s sprawling estate overlooking Lake Michigan. The room was lined with towering mahogany bookshelves, a crackling stone fireplace, and floor-to-ceiling windows framing the deep blue expanse of the water under a canopy of autumn stars.
I sat curled up in a deep leather armchair, a cup of chamomile tea resting in my lap, staring out at the reflections dancing across the glass.
Roman sat across from me at the heavy oak desk, reviewing a stack of corporate restructuring reports, though I noticed his eyes kept drifting away from the paperwork and toward me.
“You’re quiet tonight,” Roman said softly, setting his pen down.
I looked up, offering a faint, thoughtful smile. “I was just thinking about how strange my life has become. Two weeks ago, I was dreading a single Friday night gala because I couldn't afford a new dress. Now... I manage a media empire, negotiate with syndicate bosses, and live in a fortress on the lake.”
Roman stood up from the desk, walked across the Persian rug, and knelt beside my chair. He gently took the tea mug from my hands and set it on the small side table, then rested his hands on the arms of the chair, trapping me in the warmest possible way.
“Do you regret it?” he asked, his dark eyes searching mine with a hint of vulnerability that he never showed anyone else. “Do you wish you were back in your apartment, living a quiet, ordinary life?”
I reached out, my fingers tracing the sharp, familiar lines of his jaw.
“I spent my entire life hiding in the quiet, Roman,” I whispered, looking straight into his eyes. “I thought safety meant staying invisible, making no waves, and expecting nothing from the world so I would never be disappointed. But being with you... fighting by your side... I didn't realize how suffocating my old life was until you broke the door down.”
Roman’s hand came up, his warm fingers cupping the back of my head as he pulled me gently forward.

“I didn't break your door down to trap you, Lena,” he murmured against my lips. “I broke it down because I wanted you to finally have the freedom to conquer the world.”
When his lips met mine, the last remaining walls around my heart dissolved completely. It wasn't a marriage born of convenience anymore, nor was it a strategic alliance to checkmate our enemies. It was a partnership forged in fire, built on absolute trust, and sealed by a love that neither of us had expected to find.
