Chapter 7 - The Gala of Our OwnSix months after that chaotic night at the Plaza, the annual Spring Charity Gala returned to the same grand ballroom.

Only this time, the rules of the room had completely changed.

When Matteo’s black Maybach pulled up to the curb, the flashbulbs of the paparazzi illuminated the night sky like a thunderstorm. But this time, when the door swung open, the murmurs of the crowd weren't filled with mocking judgment or cruel gossip.

They were filled with awed silence.

I stepped out of the car, wearing a breathtaking, custom-designed emerald-silk evening gown that shimmered under the city lights, paired with a quiet, confident grace that needed no designer labels to validate its worth.

Matteo stepped out right behind me, offering his arm. As I placed my hand in his, he leaned down, whispering in my ear with a wicked, loving smile.

“Ready to face the lions?”

I smiled back, looking up into his warm, steady hazel eyes. “I’m not worried. I brought the lion tamer.”

As we walked up the grand marble steps and entered the glittering ballroom, the chatter around us paused. Near the edge of the room stood Mabel Laurent and a thoroughly defeated Jean Dubois. Their family’s company had been restructured under Cipriani Global’s holdings three months prior, stripping Mabel of her social standing and reducing her to a bitter, sidelined spectator in a world she once thought she owned.

When Mabel caught my eye, she turned pale and quickly looked away, retreating into the shadows of the crowd.

I didn't even give her a second thought.

Matteo led me toward the center of the ballroom, right beneath the massive crystal chandeliers where every eye was fixed on us. But this time, the stares weren't filled with contempt—they were filled with respect, envy, and absolute awe.

The orchestra began to play a slow, sweeping waltz.

Matteo pulled me into his arms, spinning me effortlessly out onto the center of the polished floor. The music enveloped us, the noise of the elite faded into a distant hum, and as Matteo’s strong hands held me securely against him, I finally understood what true belonging felt like.

I didn't need an expensive dress, a famous family, or a million-dollar necklace to prove my worth.

I had my dignity, I had my future, and most of all, I had a man who loved every single piece of who I was.

As Matteo spun me around one more time, catching me with a breathless, triumphant smile, I looked up into his eyes and knew my story had finally found its perfect ending.
