Chapter 1 - The Public Execution & The King’s DecreeThe silence of the Plaza Hotel ballroom was not a peaceful quiet; it was the tense stillness that precedes an execution.

Ayla Morris stood frozen as the icy contents of a glass of dark red Cabernet Sauvignon bled through the front of her simple black dress. The stain bloomed like an open wound across her chest, heavy, wet, and freezing against her skin.
"Oh, goodness me!" Mabel Laurent gasped, her voice pitched perfectly for the surrounding crowd to hear. She pulled her silk napkin to her chest, her face a masterclass in performative horror. "Ayla, I am so sorry! You stepped backward so suddenly! I tried to move my glass, but..."
Laughter rippled through the circle of onlookers. It started with the platinum-haired woman at Mabel’s elbow and spread like wildfire through the crowd of polished executives and diamond-draped socialites. Nobody offered a napkin. Nobody asked if she was all right. Instead, eyes sparkled with the cruel delight of high society watching an outsider get trampled.
"Look at her," someone whispered loudly enough for Ayla to hear. "She looks like a spilled inkwell."
"I told you she didn't belong here," another chimed in. "A cheap dress like that absorbed the wine instantly. Quality fabric would have repelled it."
Ayla’s fists clenched at her sides. The humiliation burned hotter than the freezing wine. She lifted her chin, refusing to let a single tear spill. "You bumped into me, Mabel."
Mabel’s polite expression instantly hardened into venomous disdain. "Excuse me? Are you accusing me of ruining that... thrift-store rag on purpose? Don't be absurd, Ayla. If anything, I did your wardrobe a favor."
More snickers erupted. Jean Dubois, Ayla’s boss, pushed his way through the gathering crowd. His face was flushed red with embarrassment—not for Ayla, but for his company’s image.
"What is going on here?" Jean snapped, staring at the deep red stain ruining Ayla's appearance. He looked at her as if she were a roach on a marble floor. "Ayla! Look at the scene you are causing! You are a complete disgrace to Dubois Media!"
"Mr. Dubois, Mabel deliberately—"
"Silence!" Jean barked, cutting her off without hesitation. He turned to Mabel with a sickeningly deferential bow of his head. "Miss Laurent, please accept my sincere apologies for my employee's gross incompetence and lack of grace. She clearly does not know how to conduct herself in civilized company."
Jean turned back to Ayla, his eyes narrow and mean. "Hand over your security badge and pack your desk tomorrow morning. You are fired. Get out of my sight before you embarrass me further."
The ballroom seemed to tilt. Ayla felt the collective gaze of two hundred wealthy elite pressing down on her shoulders. The air left her lungs. She was broke, her career was destroyed, and she was being thrown out into the night like garbage.
"Is that really how you treat your superiors, Dubois?"
The voice did not cut through the air; it crushed it.
It was a deep, gravelly baritone, smooth as aged bourbon and cold as a winter night in Palermo. The entire ballroom seemed to freeze instantly. The sharp chuckles, the hushed gossip, and the clinking of champagne flutes died away completely.
A path cleared automatically as a tall, imposing figure stepped out from the shadows near the balcony entrance.
Matteo Cipriani walked with the slow, dangerous grace of an apex predator that knew no one in the room dared to challenge him. He wore a bespoke charcoal suit that screamed power without needing a single flashy logo. His dark hair was swept back, highlighting his razor-sharp jawline and piercing, obsidian eyes that carried the weight of absolute authority. Beside him walked Kyle Torres, a broad-shouldered man whose cold eyes swept the room like a tactical sniper assessing targets.
Jean Dubois turned pale. His lip trembled as he recognized the man standing before him. "M-Mr. Cipriani..."
Matteo ignored Jean entirely. His dark eyes flicked over Mabel Laurent, who suddenly looked very small and very terrified, before landing on Ayla.
Ayla held her breath. She recognized him immediately—not as a billionaire or a notorious figure whose name made powerful men sweat, but as the tall stranger from the downtown café three weeks ago. The man who had stood in the corner, quietly watching as she helped an elderly woman carry her groceries.
Matteo walked straight toward her, ignoring the aristocratic crowd parting like the Red Sea around him. He stopped inches from Ayla. The faint scent of cedarwood, leather, and expensive tobacco enveloped her, instantly driving away the stench of spilled wine and hostility.
Without breaking eye contact with Ayla, Matteo reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a dark silk handkerchief, and gently dabbed at the wine stain on her chest. His touch was unbelievably light, a stark contrast to his terrifying presence.
"Are you alright, mia cara?" he asked softly. The warmth in his tone sent a shiver straight down her spine.
Ayla blinked, entirely bewildered. "Mia cara?"
Matteo did not answer her directly. Instead, he turned his head slowly, his gaze locking onto Jean Dubois. The warmth vanished from his eyes, replaced by an arctic frost that made the older executive visibly flinch.
"You said she was a disgrace to your company, Dubois?" Matteo asked softly. The lower his tone dropped, the more dangerous he sounded.
"I... well... Mr. Cipriani, she made a scene, she insulted Miss Laurent—"
"Miss Laurent spilled her drink because her hand was shaking with envy," Matteo interrupted, his voice cutting through Jean’s excuse like a blade. He cast a dismissive glance at Mabel, who looked as if she might faint. "And as for your company, Dubois... it will cease to exist by noon tomorrow."
Gasps echoed through the room.
Jean’s eyes went wide with panic. "Mr. Cipriani, please! I don't understand! What does this low-level employee have to do with—"
"She is not an employee," Matteo declared, his voice echoing off the grand crystal chandeliers and striking every corner of the ballroom.
He reached out, took Ayla’s trembling, ice-cold hand in his, and raised it to his lips. He pressed a warm, deliberate kiss to her knuckles, never taking his dark eyes off the stunned crowd.
"She is Ayla Morris," Matteo said, his voice ringing with absolute, unquestionable authority. "And she is my fiancée. The future mistress of the Cipriani family."
A collective gasp swept through the Plaza Hotel.
Mabel’s glass slipped from her fingers, shattering on the marble floor. Jean looked as if he had been struck by lightning, his mouth hanging open in horror as he realized the fatal mistake he had just made.
Ayla’s heart hammered violently against her ribs. She stared at the side of Matteo’s strong profile, completely speechless.
Fiancée? Mafia boss? What on earth had she just walked into?
Matteo didn't give anyone time to recover. He slipped off his heavy, tailored wool jacket and draped it gently over Ayla’s shoulders, completely covering the ruined dress and wrapping her in his protective warmth.
"Let us leave, my love," Matteo murmured, sliding his hand down to clasp hers firmly, wrapping his long fingers around her cold ones. "This room smells of trash."
