Chapter 4 - The House of Cards CollapsesBy Sunday morning, the news had broken across every major financial news network and local headline in the city.

EMPIRE IN RUINS: FEDERAL AGENTS SEIZE SALAZAR ESTATES AMID MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR FRAUD PROBE.
The front page of the City Chronicle featured a massive photograph of federal agents carting industrial-sized boxes of financial records out of the Salazar mansion, followed by a mugshot of Julian Salazar being led into a federal holding facility. The invincible Salazar name, forged over three generations of ruthless business practices and social manipulation, had evaporated overnight.
Inside the mansion—which was now officially under federal receivership pending asset forfeiture proceedings—the atmosphere was deathly quiet.
Victoria sat in the corner of the living room, staring blankly at the wall, her designer clothes suddenly looking like a costume from a life she no longer belonged to. Beatrice had locked herself in her study, refusing to open the door as teams of forensic accountants and bankruptcy trustees cataloged every painting, sculpture, and antique vase in the house.
Elena stood in the master bedroom, packing her personal belongings into two simple leather suitcases. She didn't take any of the jewelry Julian had bought her as hollow apologies over the years. She didn't take the designer dresses or the luxury accessories. She packed her laptop, her legal credentials, her identification, and a small framed photograph of her late father—the man who had taught her that integrity was worth more than all the gold in the world.
A soft knock sounded at the bedroom door.
Elena didn't look up from her packing. "Come in."
The door pushed open slowly, revealing Marcus Vance. The federal prosecutor looked tired from a sleepless night of filing court documents, but a warm, respectful smile touched his lips.
"The asset forfeiture freeze is holding," Marcus said quietly, leaning against the doorframe. "Julian’s defense team tried to file an emergency injunction an hour ago to block the seizure of his personal accounts, but the judge threw it out before they even finished reading the motion. Your evidence package was bulletproof, Elena. It's the cleanest white-collar indictment this district has seen in a decade."
"Thank you, Marcus," Elena said, closing the zipper of her suitcase with a smooth, satisfying zip. "How long before the corporate restructuring takes effect?"
"The courts are fast-tracking the liquidation of Salazar Enterprises to make restitution to the employees whose pension funds were looted," Marcus replied. "Because you acted as the primary whistleblower and cooperated directly with federal investigators, the judge has officially granted you full legal immunity and cleared your name of any association with their illicit activities. Furthermore... the courts have recognized your prior claims to the original patent assets your father developed before the Salazars bought him out twenty years ago."
Elena stopped packing. A deep, long-held breath she didn't realize she’d been holding finally escaped her lungs. Those patents—stolen from her father by Beatrice’s late husband through ruthless corporate coercion—were the real reason she had married Julian in the first place. She had set out to reclaim what was rightfully her family's, and she had dismantled an entire empire in the process.

"It's over," Elena whispered, a quiet, genuine smile touching her lips.
"No, Elena," Marcus corrected gently, stepping into the room and offering her a hand. "It's just beginning."
