Chapter 3 - The Broken Foundation

Before Victoria’s manicured nails could reach my skin, a heavy thud echoed from the private elevator foyer outside my front door.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
Heavy, measured footsteps stopped right outside the open doorway.
Victoria froze mid-lunge, her hand hovering a mere inch from my cheek. Ryan whipped his head around toward the entryway, his eyes wide with sudden, breathless panic.
Two men in charcoal-gray federal suits stepped into the penthouse foyer, their badges gleaming sharply under the recessed hallway lights. At the front stood Arthur Vance—no relation to Ryan, despite the shared surname—the senior managing partner of Bellamy Global’s legal defense division and my chief corporate counsel. Behind him stood a local precinct captain.
"Good morning, Ms. Bellamy," Arthur greeted me respectfully, offering a crisp nod before turning his cold, piercing gaze onto the two intruders standing in my kitchen.
Ryan scrambled backward, nearly tripping over a barstool in his haste to put distance between himself and the federal attorneys. "Arthur? What are you doing here? This is a private family dispute! My wife—my ex-wife—is having a mental breakdown!"
Arthur didn't even blink. He reached into his leather briefcase, pulled out a thick, heavy stack of legal documents bound with red ribbon, and tossed them onto the marble kitchen island. They landed with a heavy, ominous thud right next to my espresso cup.
"Mr. Ryan Vance, you are no longer dealing with a domestic dispute," Arthur announced, his voice ringing crisp and authoritative across the silent penthouse. "As of 8:00 AM this morning, Bellamy Global has formally filed a multi-count federal civil lawsuit against Holloway-Vance Investments, alleging corporate fraud, embezzlement of venture capital, and fraudulent misrepresentation of institutional asset backing."
Ryan’s knees buckled slightly. He grabbed onto the edge of the counter to keep from collapsing. "Fraud? Embezzlement? That's insane! We have active contracts! We have ongoing real estate developments in Brickell and downtown Miami!"
"Not anymore," Arthur replied smoothly, pulling a tablet out of his briefcase and tapping the screen. "At 8:05 AM, federal district judges in both New York and Florida granted emergency asset-seizure warrants. Every single commercial property, corporate bank account, and personal luxury asset registered under Holloway-Vance Investments—including your downtown office lease, your Bentley Continental, and your personal checking accounts—has been frozen pending federal audit."
Victoria let out a strangled, breathless cry, her knees finally giving out beneath her. She sank heavily onto one of the upholstered barstools, her hands trembling uncontrollably as her designer handbag slipped from her fingers and crashed onto the floor.
"No... no, this isn't possible," Victoria whispered, staring blankly at the marble tiles. "We are the Vances. We run in high circles. People don't do this to us."
"People don't," I agreed softly, stepping around the kitchen island until I stood directly in front of Ryan, looking up into his pale, sweat-slicked face. "But then again, you forgot one fundamental rule of high finance, Ryan: never bite the hand that feeds you. And certainly never abuse the woman who owns the hand."
Ryan swallowed hard, his arrogant veneer completely shattered, replaced by the pathetic, sniveling coward he had always been underneath the custom Italian suits. "Sophia... please," he choked out, his eyes welling with desperate tears. "We were married. We shared a life. You can't do this to me. I'll be ruined! The creditors will strip everything I own!"
"Then I suggest you start packing a very small bag," I replied coldly. "Because by noon, federal marshals will be changing the locks on your corporate headquarters."
The precinct captain stepped forward, placing a hand lightly on his utility belt. "Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance, you are trespassing in a private residence after being formally asked to leave. I suggest you walk out of here quietly right now, or I will be forced to place you under arrest."

Victoria didn't move. She sat frozen on the barstool like a statue carved from denial and grief.
Ryan looked between the federal attorneys, the police captain, and me, realizing with absolute, crushing certainty that his empire of lies had finally burned to the ground. Without another word, he grabbed his mother by the arm, hauled her up from the stool, and practically dragged her out of the apartment, their hurried footsteps echoing down the hallway until the elevator doors chimed and swallowed them whole.
