Chapter 7 - The Crown of the Empire

The hospital room was quiet, filled with the soft, steady hum of monitors and the sweet, clean scent of white lilies.
Outside the large glass window, the lights of Manhattan twinkled like a million diamonds against the velvet night sky. But inside the room, all the light in the universe was concentrated in the small, warm bundle resting against my chest.
She had my eyes—deep, observant, and fiercely bright—and a head of soft, dark hair.
The door clicked open softly, and Arthur stepped into the room, holding a single, flawless white rose. He stopped a few feet from the bed, his expression filled with a rare, paternal warmth.
"She is magnificent, Ms. Vanguard," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling slightly.
"Thank you, Arthur," I murmured, looking down at the tiny fingers wrapped around my thumb with astonishing, unbreakable strength. "Meet Elena Vanguard."
"Elena," Arthur repeated, smiling gently. "A strong name for a strong future."
"The strongest," I agreed, kissing the top of my daughter’s warm head.
The legal battles were over. The Morrison family was a distant, forgotten footnote in the court ledgers of downtown Manhattan, their estate auctioned off, their names stripped of every privilege they had once taken for granted. They had tried to break me with a bucket of dirty water on a cold winter night, believing I was nothing more than a poor, disposable burden.
Instead, they had accidentally forged the final test of an empire.
I looked down at Elena, feeling a fierce, protective wave of absolute power and unconditional love wash over my soul. No one would ever look down on her. No one would ever make her feel small, or invisible, or dependent on the mercy of the unworthy.

I had built this world from dust, and I would hand it to her as a crown.
"Welcome home, my little girl," I whispered against her cheek, as the city lights outside burned brighter than ever, illuminating the path to a future where we would never, ever bow again.
