Chapter 6 - The Collapsing EmpireWithin forty-eight hours of the catastrophic wedding implosion, the institutional walls that had protected my family’s corrupt syndicate for decades crumbled into dust.

Federal agents, acting on the comprehensive forensic dossiers Brooke and I had submitted directly to the United States Attorney’s Office, executed simultaneous search warrants on Arthur’s downtown penthouse, my father’s corporate offices at Vance Crest Holdings, and their primary commercial real estate development sites.
The fallout was swift and merciless.
Vance Crest Holdings’ stock plummeted by seventy-four percent before the stock market even opened on Monday morning. Institutional investors pulled out their capital en masse, terrified of being tainted by association with a company proven to be laundering stolen pension funds and operating through forged corporate resolutions.
My father was arrested at his country club on Monday afternoon, hauled out in handcuffs in front of his golfing peers while television news crews captured every humiliating second. Stripped of his corporate title, his assets frozen by federal judges, and facing up to twenty years in federal prison for wire fraud and securities manipulation, his legendary stoicism finally cracked. He spent his first night in a holding cell weeping into his hands, realizing that his lifetime of ruthless ambition had culminated in absolute ruin.
Arthur attempted to flee the state on a private red-eye flight to Canada, but federal marshals intercepted him at O’Hare International Airport before his boarding pass could even be scanned. His legal representation abandoned him within twenty-four hours when retainer checks bounced due to frozen bank accounts. Between bigamy, abandonment, embezzlement, and corporate fraud, legal analysts on local news channels were already calling his case open-and-shut.
And Sienna?
My sister locked herself inside our parents' sprawling mansion, refusing to answer calls, texts, or media inquiries. The high-society friends who had fawned over her designer dresses and toasted her glamorous wedding vanished overnight, blocking her number and pretending they had barely known her. The fairy-tale life she had stolen by destroying me had turned out to be built on quicksand.
As for me?
On Wednesday morning, my phone rang. It wasn't my mother begging for money, nor was it my father demanding obedience.
It was Brooke.
"Eleanor," Brooke’s voice laughed through the receiver, sounding lighter, freer, and happier than she had in years. "Are you watching the news?"
"I am," I smiled, looking out my apartment window at the bright morning sun breaking through the clouds.
"The federal prosecutor just called," Brooke continued, her voice trembling slightly with emotion. "Arthur’s assets have been legally seized, and the court has expedited my formal divorce and awarded me full custody, alongside restitution diverted directly from his hidden corporate accounts. My son and I... we're finally safe."
"I'm so glad, Brooke," I replied, my heart swelling with genuine warmth. "You and your son deserve every bit of that peace."
May you like
"We couldn't have done it without you, Eleanor," Brooke said softly. "You didn't just expose them. You gave us our lives back."
"We balanced the ledger," I corrected gently. "That's all."
