Chapter 1 - The Text That Shattered Flight 402The cabin pressure of First Class always made my ears ring, but right now, the only sound in my head was the violent, irregular thud of my own heartbeat.

We were at thirty thousand feet, somewhere over the dark, turbulent waters of the Atlantic, heading toward a lifetime of calculated perfection in Florence. Next to me, Camille sat with her legs crossed, the silk of her cream designer trousers whispering against the leather seat. She had not looked at me since the plane took off from Logan International. Her eyes were fixed on her iPad, her thumb scrolling past vineyard layouts and catering contracts for our homecoming gala as if the woman we had just left at Gate C12 did not exist.
But she did. And so did the little girl with my eyes.
My phone, switched to in-flight Wi-Fi, buzzed against my thigh. The screen illuminated the dim cabin.
Naomi: Elliot, there’s a reason I never told you.
My fingers shook as I tapped the notification. My breath caught in my throat as the rest of the message loaded.
Naomi: When I found out I was pregnant, I went to your family’s estate in Beacon Hill to tell you. I never made it past the iron gates. Your mother met me in the driveway. She handed me a non-disclosure agreement and a check for five hundred thousand dollars. She told me that if I ever ruined your upcoming engagement to Camille, she would use the Rhodes family’s legal team to ensure I was declared an unfit mother and lose custody of my child forever. I took the check, Elliot. But not for the money. I took it because I knew your family would destroy my baby just to keep your future pristine. Don't look for us. We were never part of your arrangement.
The phone slipped from my hand, clattering against the metal armrest.
A cold, sickening fury washed over me. I looked out the window at the endless expanse of clouds, the cabin light reflecting my own hollow face back at me.
"Is she yours?"
Camille’s voice was like ice, cutting through my panic. She didn't look up from her tablet, but her finger had stopped scrolling.
"The text," I whispered, my voice thick with a rage I could barely contain. "My mother knew. She knew about Bella two years ago. She threatened Naomi. She used your family's name to scare her into running away."
Camille slowly turned her head to look at me. Her expression wasn't shocked. It wasn't devastated. It was perfectly, terrifyingly composed—the face of a woman who had been groomed from birth to handle corporate crises and high-society scandals.
"Of course she did, Elliot," Camille said softly, her voice carrying a chillingly practical tone. "Did you really think a man of your caliber could just have a illegitimate child with a schoolteacher from South Boston? Your family’s company was in the middle of a merger with my father's firm. A scandal like that would have wiped out forty percent of our market value before the papers were even signed."
I stared at her, feeling as though I were looking at a stranger. "You... you knew too?"
Camille reached over and gently closed my laptop, her diamond-encrusted wedding band catching the dim overhead light.
"I knew your mother took care of a 'problem' before our engagement party, Elliot," she murmured, her voice dropping to a whisper. "I didn't ask for details because I didn't care. But now, you've made a scene in the middle of a crowded terminal. You looked at that child like she was your salvation. That is a liability I cannot ignore."
May you like
She leaned closer, the scent of her expensive French perfume suddenly suffocating me.
"We are going to land in Florence. We are going to spend two weeks taking beautiful, smiling photos for the press. And when we return, you will sign a document surrendering all paternal claims to that child. If you don't," Camille’s eyes turned into sharp, deadly chips of glass, "I will ensure your mother’s threat becomes a reality. I will take that little girl away from her mother, and I will do it using the very laws you helped write."
