Chapter 3 - The Rising Tide

Two weeks later, I stepped out of a sleek black town car and stood before the imposing iron gates of the Vance ancestral estate on the cliffs overlooking Puget Sound.
The sprawling stone manor looked like a European fortress, surrounded by manicured gardens, towering pine trees, and the endless expanse of the Pacific Ocean. It was a place of immense power, luxury, and absolute security—everything my life with Victor had lacked.
When I walked through the grand double doors, a team of dedicated domestic staff greeted me with respectful, warm smiles. They had prepared a nursery on the second floor—a sunlit room filled with handcrafted wooden furniture, soft cashmere blankets, and walls painted in calming shades of cream and sage green.
For the first time in years, I slept through the night without waking up in terror, listening for footsteps in the hallway.
But my mind wasn't entirely at peace.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, while sitting in the expansive glass-walled solarium sipping herbal tea, my phone buzzed on the table. It was a secure burner device Alexander had provided me for communications outside the estate.
A text message flashed on the screen from an unknown number:
They are coming for you, Maya. You can't hide behind your uncle forever. Victor will get out, and when he does, you’ll pay for everything.
My breath hitched in my throat. The tea cup in my hand shook, spilling a few drops onto the saucer.
Before panic could fully paralyze me, the glass doors slid open, and Alexander walked in, followed by his chief head of security, a towering, scarred veteran named Marcus.
Alexander took one look at my pale face and the phone in my hand. He crossed the room in three long strides, taking the device from my fingers and glancing at the screen.
A dark, lethal shadow crossed Alexander’s face.
“Marcus,” Alexander said quietly, not taking his eyes off the phone.
“Already traced it, Mr. Vance,” Marcus replied smoothly, tapping a tablet in his hand. “The message was routed through a burner phone smuggled into the detention center by a corrupt guard on the Moreno payroll. The guard is currently being detained, and the phone has been confiscated.”
Alexander handed the device back to me, his expression softening as he pulled up a chair beside mine.
“You don't need to be afraid, Maya,” Alexander said firmly. “Victor is locked behind three layers of reinforced concrete. He doesn't even have access to a pencil, let alone a contraband phone for much longer. That message was the desperate squeak of a trapped rat.”
“It just felt too real,” I whispered, wrapping my arms around my growing belly. “For three years, I lived under his thumb. Every time he raised his voice, my body still remembers.”
Alexander reached out, placing his warm hand gently over mine.
“Scars don't vanish overnight,” he acknowledged quietly. “But you are no longer the girl who got trapped in that house. You are a Vance. And soon, you’re going to help me dismantle what’s left of the Moreno syndicate once and for all.”
I looked up at him, surprise flickering in my eyes. “Dismantle them? I thought they were already ruined.”
“Financially, yes,” Alexander smiled, a cold, calculating edge returning to his expression. “But Raul and Helena are still trying to pull strings behind the scenes. They think if they can rally their old political allies, they can force a settlement and get Victor out on a technicality.”
He stood up, walking toward the glass wall as the rain beat against the panes outside.
“Tomorrow evening, the annual Metropolitan Charity Gala is being held downtown,” Alexander continued, turning back to face me. “Every major political figure, business titan, and syndicate boss in the Pacific Northwest will be in attendance. Raul Moreno secured a temporary medical furlough for his wife, claiming she’s too frail to face trial alone. They plan to attend, hoping to garner public sympathy and spin a narrative that you were a hysterical, unstable wife who fabricated the abuse.”

My blood ran cold. “They’re going to smear me in public?”
“They’re going to try,” Alexander said, his eyes locking onto mine with fierce, unyielding loyalty. “Which is why you are going to attend the gala with me. Not as a victim hiding in the shadows, but as the rightful heiress of the Vance empire.”
