Chapter 6 - The Final VerdictThe jury deliberated for precisely forty-two minutes.

When the foreperson stood up to read the verdict, the silence in the federal courtroom was absolute.

“On Count One: Aggravated Kidnapping... Guilty.”

“On Count Two: Torture and Deprivation of Liberty... Guilty.”

“On Count Three: Attempted Manslaughter of a Minor and Maternal Endangerment... Guilty.”

“On Count Four: Extortion, Wire Fraud, and Corporate Embezzlement... Guilty.”

Count after count, the verdict rang out like hammer blows falling on an anvil. With every guilty pronouncement, Marcus slumped further forward in his chair, burying his face in his trembling, cuffed hands as quiet sobs escaped his throat.

The judge adjusted his glasses, looked down from the high mahogany bench, and delivered the sentence without a trace of mercy.

“Marcus Vance, for crimes of extraordinary brutality, calculated cruelty, and absolute moral corruption, this court sentences you to consecutive terms totaling ninety-nine years in federal prison, without the possibility of parole. Furthermore, all remaining personal assets, corporate holdings, and residual properties are ordered seized for full restitution to the victim and the state.”

The heavy gavel came down with a sharp, definitive crack.

Bang.

Federal marshals immediately stepped up behind Marcus, snapping heavy steel chains around his waist and jerking him to his feet. As they hauled him away toward the holding cells, Marcus turned his tear-stained, desperate face toward me one last time, opening his mouth as if to beg for forgiveness.

I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I simply watched him vanish through the heavy steel doors of the courtroom, knowing that the nightmare was finally, permanently over.

As we walked out of the courthouse steps into the brilliant, golden California sunshine, a cool ocean breeze washed over us. My father held Maya gently in his arms, while Elena looped her arm through mine, smiling brightly.

“Where to first, Madam Chair?” my father asked with a warm, proud smile.

I looked out at the endless expanse of the Pacific Ocean, feeling the unshakeable warmth of freedom radiating deep within my soul.

“Home, Dad,” I whispered, taking my daughter into my arms. “Let’s go home.”
