Chapter 4 - The Playground IncidentThree days later, the rain returned, turning the asphalt of Prospect Park slick and dark under a heavy autumn canopy.

Sebastian Thorne did not go to Apexora. He didn't call his board of directors, and he didn't check his stock portfolio. Since Tuesday night, his black Maybach had remained parked three blocks away from the Park Slope brownstone, serving as a silent, miserable stakeout for a man who had lost his empire of control.

He watched from behind tinted windows as Elena walked the children to the local park each morning. He watched from a distance as Liam, Noah, and Chloe ran across the wet grass, their small laughter drifting faintly on the damp breeze.

And he watched Marcus push the swings.

It was torture. Pure, unadulterated psychological torture of his own design.

On Friday afternoon, the rain cleared into a brisk, gray mist. Sebastian stepped out of the Maybach, pulling up the collar of his wool coat, and walked toward the park entrance on foot. He didn't wear his usual designer suit; instead, he wore a simple black turtleneck and dark jeans, trying desperately to look like any other tired father in Brooklyn.

He kept his distance, leaning against the cold iron fence surrounding the playground area.

The kids were playing near the sandbox. Liam was building a towering fort with plastic shovels, while Noah and Chloe chased each other around the climbing frame. Elena sat on a wooden park bench a few yards away, reading a thick paperback novel, though her eyes frequently flicked up to monitor the kids.

For ten minutes, Sebastian just stood there, breathing in the scent of wet earth and decaying leaves, watching his children exist without him.

Then, everything changed in a fraction of a second.

A stray dog—a large, aggressive German Shepherd off its leash—burst out from the tree line near the park path, barking wildly as it chased a fallen tennis ball. The animal bolted straight into the playground enclosure, heading directly toward the sandbox where Liam was sitting.

"Mommy!" Liam screamed, dropping his shovel and freezing in terror as the barking beast bounded toward him with bared teeth.

Elena dropped her book, screaming out in horror as she surged off the bench, sprinting across the rubber mulch. "Liam! No! Get back!"

Before Elena could reach her son, and before Marcus—who was talking to another parent near the entrance—could react, Sebastian moved with terrifying, instinctive speed.

He didn't think about his Italian leather shoes sinking into the mud. He didn't think about his multi-billion-dollar corporation waiting for his signature.

He vaulted the iron fence in a single, fluid leap, hit the ground running, and threw himself between the charging dog and his terrified son.

The dog lunged, its teeth snapping shut around the thick wool sleeve of Sebastian’s coat, tearing the fabric as Sebastian drove his weight forward, slamming the animal back onto the pavement with a fierce, guttural shout.

"Get back!" Sebastian roared, his voice carrying the terrifying authority of an apex predator defending its pack.

Startled by the violence of the counter-attack, the dog yelped, dropped the torn fabric, and bolted away into the trees as fast as it had appeared.

Silence descended instantly upon the playground.

Liam was shaking like a leaf, tears streaming down his small face. Noah and Chloe were crying near the climbing frame.

Sebastian didn't care about his torn coat or his bruised shoulder. He dropped to his knees in the mud, pulling Liam tightly against his chest, burying his face in the little boy’s soft brown hair.

"I've got you," Sebastian choked out, his voice trembling violently as tears of sheer adrenaline and terror finally spilled over his eyelashes. "I've got you, buddy. You're safe. Daddy’s got you."

Footsteps crunched frantically on the gravel.

"Liam! Oh, my god, Liam!" Elena screamed, dropping to her knees beside them, her hands frantically checking her son’s arms and legs for injuries.

"I'm okay, Mommy," Liam sobbed, clinging to Sebastian’s neck just as tightly as he clung to his mother. "The... the man saved me. He fought the big dog."

Elena froze.

Slowly, she raised her head. Her dark eyes met Sebastian’s tear-stained green eyes across the shivering form of their son.

The mud on Sebastian’s face, the torn wool of his coat, the blood welling from a shallow scratch on his forearm where the dog’s teeth had grazed him—it completely shattered the illusion of the untouchable billionaire.

There was no Wall Street tycoon sitting in the mud of a Brooklyn playground.

There was only a father who had just put his life on the line to save his child.
