Chapter 7 - The First Star of DawnThree weeks later, the Manhattan mansion felt entirely different.

The grand estate had been purged of every lingering shadow, every vestige of Isabella’s fraudulent presence, and every reminder of the syndicate war that had nearly torn Alessandro’s world apart. The nursery upstairs had been dismantled—not with grief, but with a quiet, deliberate closure.
It was a crisp, clear morning in early summer. Sunlight poured through the tall windows of the east drawing room, warming the polished wooden floors and casting a brilliant, golden glow across the gardens outside.
Alessandro sat at his mahogany desk, reviewing final legal documents, when a soft knock sounded at the open door.
He looked up.
Sophia stood in the doorway, wearing her neat housekeeper’s uniform, but her posture was relaxed, and a genuine, soft smile graced her face. Peering out from behind her skirt was little Emma, clutching a small, handmade drawing of a golden retriever puppy in her hands.
“Mr. Moretti,” Sophia said politely. “We finished clearing out the east wing storage as you requested.”
Alessandro laid his pen down, standing up slowly from his desk. He walked around to the front of the mahogany table, looking down at the little girl.
“Come in, Emma,” he said, his voice carrying a warmth that the estate staff had never heard before.
Emma stepped hesitantly into the room, walking right up to him with those big, inquisitive brown eyes. Without a word of hesitation, she reached out and handed him the drawing.
“For you,” she said softly. “Because you don't look sad anymore.”
Alessandro took the paper, looking at the clumsy, colorful crayons that depicted a very lopsided dog standing beside a very tall man. A rare, genuine smile touched the corners of his mouth.
“Thank you, Emma,” he murmured, crouching down so he was at eye level with her. “You know... your mother told me something interesting yesterday.”
Emma tilted her head. “What?”
“She told me that you’re the bravest little girl in New York.”
Emma puffed out her chest with pride. “I am. I told Mom that bad guys aren't scary when you have a good heart.”
Alessandro looked up, meeting Sophia’s gaze across the room. There was a quiet, unspoken understanding passing between them—a mutual realization that through all the betrayal, blood, and deceit, something genuine and unshakeable had quietly taken root in the quiet corners of the estate.
He stood back up, walking over to the French doors and pushing them wide open to let the fresh summer breeze sweep through the room.

Outside, across the sprawling lawns of the Manhattan estate, the morning sun climbed higher into the brilliant blue sky, washing away the last remnants of the past. High above the skyline, through the crystal-clear air, a single, brilliant star lingered in the western horizon—steady, beautiful, and blindingly bright.
Alessandro smiled, resting his hand gently on Emma’s head, knowing with absolute certainty that the storm was finally over, and he was finally, truly home.
