Chapter 4 - The Ransom of the PastAlessandro tore open the envelope with fingers that refused to shake, though his heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Inside was a single polaroid photograph and a handwritten note.

The photo showed little Emma and Sophia tied to chairs in what looked like the industrial basement of the old Brooklyn docks warehouse—Marcus’s old stronghold. Emma’s pink bow was stained with dirt, and tears streaked her cheeks, though she wasn't crying out.

The note, written in hasty, aggressive strokes, read:

“Hello, old friend. You thought you buried me six years ago, but men like us never really die. You want your housekeeper and her brat back? Bring the central ledger, the bearer bonds from the Swiss vault, and Isabella. Meet me at Pier 44 by midnight. Come alone, or the little girl dies first.”

Alessandro crushed the note in his fist, his knuckles turning chalk white.

“Boss,” Wesley’s voice crackled over the comms, sounding much steadier now that the immediate vanguard had been cleared. “We secured the foyer. Three of Marcus’s men are neutralized, and one is captured. We’re interrogating him now.”

“Bring him to me. In the armory. Now,” Alessandro commanded, his voice trembling with a rage so absolute it had frozen his blood.

Five minutes later, Wesley dragged a bloodied, cowering operative into the subterranean armory beneath the mansion. The man was thrown hard against the concrete floor at Alessandro’s feet.

“Who else is with Marcus?” Alessandro demanded, pressing the barrel of his Beretta directly against the man’s knee cap.

“I swear to God, I don't know!” the operative screamed, weeping in terror. “Marcus came back from Europe six months ago! He recruited Isabella through her old debts! She was supposed to marry you, inherit half your empire through the pre-nup, and then liquidate the assets to fund Marcus’s new syndicate!”

“And the child?” Alessandro asked, his voice dropping into a whisper that made even Wesley step back. “Whose child was Isabella supposed to be carrying?”

“It was never yours!” the man sobbed. “She used a surrogate clinic in Jersey! The baby was supposed to be born next month, registered under your name so you’d be legally trapped with an heir that wasn't yours, giving Marcus ultimate leverage over your board of directors!”

Alessandro closed his eyes. The sheer scale of the deception was staggering. Every single detail of his life for the past two years had been a manufactured lie designed to destroy him from the inside out.

And yet, none of that mattered anymore.

What mattered was that Sophia—a quiet, hardworking woman who had served his household with dignity—and her innocent six-year-old daughter were currently hostages in a slaughterhouse because they had been in the wrong room at the wrong time.

“Wesley,” Alessandro said, opening his eyes. They were completely black, devoid of mercy. “Prep the chopper on the roof. Load the heavy ordnance. And bring me my father’s shotgun.”

“Boss,” Wesley warned quietly, stepping forward. “Pier 44 is a trap. Marcus has snipers positioned across the container yards. If you walk in there alone, you won't walk out.”

“Who said I was going alone?” Alessandro pulled back the slide of his rifle, loading a fresh round into the chamber with a crisp, lethal snap. “I’m not walking into Marcus’s trap, Wesley. I’m bringing the trap to him.”
