Chapter 4 - The Confession in the DarkDown in the subterranean security holding suite of the Vance estate—a reinforced concrete bunker built beneath the mansion during the Cold War—the air was cool, sterile, and lit by emergency fluorescent strips.

Serena sat handcuffed to a heavy steel chair bolted directly into the floor.
Her designer silk blouse was scorched at the hem, her hair tangled, and a nasty bruise purpled her left cheek where she had hit the floor during the struggle. She stared blankly at the concrete wall, her chest heaving with shallow, exhausted breaths.
Standing on the other side of the heavy wire-mesh partition were Victor Vance, Lily, and Captain Marcus Vance of the State Financial Crimes Task Force, who had arrived with a full tactical unit within twenty minutes of the fire being contained by the automated sprinkler systems.
Marcus slammed a thick, red-bound federal dossier down onto the metal interrogation table.
“The forensic team processed the west tower archive, Mr. Vance,” Marcus reported formally, clicking open a tablet to display digital scans of Eleanor’s recovered diary and financial wire receipts. “We have verified undisputed proof of premeditated homicide, industrial espionage, and the systematic embezzlement of over eighty million dollars from the corporate foundation trusts.”
Victor didn't look at Marcus. His eyes were fixed entirely on Serena.
“You lost, Serena,” Victor said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. “The safe deposit box under the chapel has already been opened by federal marshals. Every single offshore account, forged document, and confession letter Eleanor left behind is now in the hands of the district attorney.”
Serena slowly lifted her head. Her lips curled into a slow, macabre smile. She didn't look like a defeated criminal; she looked like someone who had nothing left to lose and found absolute freedom in the destruction.
“You think you won, don't you, Victor?” Serena whispered, her voice raspy and dry. “You think locking me away in some federal penitentiary brings Eleanor back? You think the board of directors is going to let you run the company after they find out who really signed off on the illegal shipping waivers three years ago?”
Victor frowned, stepping closer to the mesh partition. “What are you talking about?”
“Ask your precious board chairman, Arthur Sterling,” Serena laughed softly, a wet, rattling sound. “Ask him whose signature authorized the shell company transfers that funded this entire estate. I didn't act alone, Victor. I never acted alone. The board knew about Eleanor. They helped me sweep her accident under the rug because a dead wife is much easier to manage than a living one with a conscience.”
Lily gasped, stepping back instinctively as a cold shiver ran down her spine.
Marcus Vance frowned, tapping furiously on his tablet. “Mr. Vance... I’m running a quick background cross-reference on those corporate escrow accounts Serena just mentioned. If Arthur Sterling was tied into the offshore routing numbers... that means the entire board of directors was complicit in the cover-up.”

Victor’s hands clenched into tight fists at his sides. The nightmare wasn't isolated to a jealous, deranged sister-in-law. The corruption ran straight to the highest levels of Vance International.
And if the board was involved, they would do anything—including destroying Victor, Lily, and little Ethan—to keep the truth buried forever.
