Chapter 5 - Ashes to AshesThe federal marshals didn't use plastic restraints, but watching Julian Vance’s arms cuffed behind his back as they led him out of his own executive suite offered a catharsis so profound I felt as though I had finally exhaled a breath I’d been holding for three years.

He didn't look at me as they walked him past. His head was down, his arrogant facade completely shattered by the cold reality of a trap engineered with surgical precision.
When the elevator doors closed behind him, the heavy silence of the penthouse suite settled back over us. The Chicago skyline glittered through the massive glass windows, a vast grid of lights stretching out into the dark horizon.
I stood near the edge of the room, my hands resting on the back of an empty leather chair, feeling a strange, hollow lightness in my chest. The monster who had locked the door was gone. The fire was finally out.
"Are you alright?" Vincent asked softly, stepping close. He didn't touch me yet, giving me all the space in the world to anchor myself.
"I thought I would feel triumphant," I murmured, staring out at the city lights. "Instead, I just feel... quiet."
"That’s not emptiness, Maya," Vincent said, walking around the chair to stand in front of me. "That’s peace. The noise in your head can finally stop."
I looked up into his dark eyes, seeing the fierce, unwavering loyalty burning quietly within them. Without thinking, I reached out, my fingers sliding into the lapel of his jacket, pulling him just a fraction closer.
"You bought an entire corporation just to corner him," I said, a faint, disbelieving smile touching my lips. "You are completely insane, Vincent Russo."
"I told you," he replied, a slow, warm smile breaking across his handsome face. "I don't run from fires. And I certainly don't let anyone who hurts what's mine walk away."
What's mine. The words sent a delicious shiver straight down my spine. There was no ownership in them—only a deep, fierce claim of mutual survival and unspoken love.
"We should go back to New York," I whispered. "I have two hundred white roses waiting to be arranged."
May you like
"We can burn the white roses if you want," Vincent joked softly. "We can fill your entire shop with red ones."
"No," I laughed, shaking my head as the last of the shadows finally dissolved from my mind. "Let’s keep the white ones. Only this time... we’ll make sure they’re celebrating something real."
