Chapter 3 - The Gathering StormBy 9:00 PM, the news of the broken engagement had detonated through Miami’s high-society and underground networks like an artillery shell.

I sat in the dark leather armchair of my private study on the second floor, drinking a glass of neat bourbon. The panoramic glass windows offered an unbroken view of the dark Atlantic Ocean, where the distant lights of cargo ships moved slowly across the horizon.

Standing across from my desk was Marco, holding an encrypted satellite tablet.

"Julian Hart called an emergency meeting with the district attorney thirty minutes ago, Boss," Marco reported smoothly, his tone grim. "He's pulling the secondary customs clearances for our container ships at PortMiami. He's also mobilized the city's vice division to inspect our night venues in South Beach."

"And my mother?" I asked, taking a slow sip of bourbon.

"Mrs. Cole's car is coming up the driveway right now," Marco answered, checking his watch. "She drove straight from the Surf Club when the Hart family canceled the dinner."

I didn't move. I didn't reach for my suit coat. I simply sat in the armchair, watching the heavy double doors of my study swing open.

Margaret Cole walked into the room.

At sixty-five, my mother was an imposing, immaculate woman who carried herself with the sharp, ruthless authority of old Miami royalty. She wore a dark navy Chanel suit, her silver-blonde hair styled in a rigid chignon, her dark eyes flashing with pure, unadulterated fury.

"Have you completely lost your mind, Dante?!" Margaret demanded, her voice cutting through the quiet study like a whip as she slammed her leather handbag onto my desk. "Julian Hart called me ten minutes ago in hysterics! Vanessa arrived home with a swollen face claiming you threatened her life!"

"Vanessa struck Grace in front of my son, Mother," I stated flatly, my voice smooth and ice-cold.

Margaret let out a sharp, dismissive sigh, waving her hand in the air. "She slapped a nanny! A servant! You ruined a forty-million-dollar port alliance, humiliated our family name, and alienated the city's primary political donor because an employee got her feelings hurt?!"

I set my bourbon glass down on the mahogany desk with a soft, deliberate clink.

I stood up slowly, my six-foot-two frame towering over my mother, the shadows of the room wrapping around my broad shoulders.

"Grace is not an employee, Mother," I said, my baritone dropping into a low, deadly register that made Margaret’s breath catch in her throat.

Margaret stared at me, her dark eyes narrowing as she read the absolute, unyielding resolve in my face.

"Dante..." Margaret whispered, her aristocratic voice wavering for the first time. "What are you saying? You can't possibly mean... the nanny?"

"Her name is Grace Miller," I corrected, every word carved from raw iron. "And if you ever speak to her, treat her, or refer to her as a servant again, you will be barred from stepping onto this property for the rest of your life."

Margaret gasped, taking an instinctive step back toward the door, her hand clutching her pearl necklace. "I am your mother! I built the foundation of this syndicate alongside your father! Claire would be disgusted by what you're doing!"

"Claire left a note in Noah's box, Mother," I said softly, looking my mother straight in the eyes. "She told me that if another woman ever loved our boy enough to make him feel safe, I shouldn't punish her because Claire had to leave first."

May you like

Margaret went completely still. Her face drained of color as the words settled into her soul, leaving her stripped of every arrogant argument she had prepared on the drive over.

"Get out of my office, Mother," I murmured gently, turning my back to look out the window at the ocean. "I have a family to protect."
