Chapter 6 - The UnravelingAn hour later, the courtyard was pristine again. The SUVs had been towed away, Derek’s men were locked in the estate’s secure holding cells waiting for federal transport, and Derek himself had been unceremoniously dumped outside the city limits with a broken nose, a ruined suit, and a very clear message about what would happen if he ever mentioned my name again.

I was standing by the study window when Victor walked back inside.

He looked entirely unbothered, though there was a small smear of dried blood on his knuckle that didn't belong to him. He unbuttoned his jacket, tossing it over the back of the sofa, and walked over to the decanter on the sideboard to pour himself a glass of scotch.

"Is it over?" I asked quietly, my voice trembling slightly as I turned to face him.

"It's over," Victor said, taking a slow sip of the amber liquid. "Derek’s corporate accounts are being frozen by the SEC as we speak, thanks to some irregularities my auditors uncovered last night. By tomorrow morning, he won't even have the money to pay his own lawyers, let alone threaten your family."

I walked slowly across the room, stopping a few feet away from him. The weight that had crushed my chest for three long years had finally, completely vanished. For the first time in my adult life, I could breathe.

"You destroyed him," I whispered, realizing the absolute scale of what Victor had dismantled in less than twenty-four hours.

"I leveled the playing field," Victor corrected me softly, turning to face me. He set the glass down and took a step closer. "He took three years of your life, Lena. I took his empire in a day. Call it a fair trade."

"And what happens to me now?" I asked, looking up into his gray eyes. "Now that I'm free... what do I do?"

Victor reached out, his hand gently cupping my cheek. His thumb brushed over my skin, warm and deliberate. There was no ownership in his touch, no demand, no threat. Only a quiet, unwavering invitation.

"You stay here," he said, his voice dropping into a low, resonant rumble that went straight to my core. "Or you go wherever you want in the world, with all the protection and resources I can provide. The choice has always been yours, Lena. You just had to realize it."

I looked at him—at the man who had stepped out of the shadows of Chicago's underworld not to cage me, but to break my locks.

"I don't want to go anywhere," I whispered, leaning slightly into his warm palm.

A slow, genuine smile spread across Victor’s face—a smile that made him look less like a feared syndicate boss and more like a man who had finally won the only prize that ever truly mattered.
