Chapter 5 - The Ledger of SinsThe morning sun cast golden beams across the opulent Persian rug of my suite. Someone had quietly left a steaming cup of Earl Grey tea and a fresh plate of pastries on the mahogany desk near the window.

After dressing in a simple cashmere sweater and trousers Maria had left for me, I stepped out into the grand hallway. The mansion was eerily quiet in the daylight, save for the distant sound of classical piano music drifting up from the lower levels.

Following the sound, I descended the sweeping marble staircase and found myself near a set of double doors leading into a massive private library.

The door was slightly ajar.

Inside, Victor Salvatore stood by a massive stone fireplace, wearing a dark turtleneck and slacks. He wasn't playing the piano—an automated player system was humming softly in the corner—instead, he was reviewing a stack of physical paper documents spread out across a massive mahogany table.

As I approached the open door, my shoe tapped lightly against the hardwood floor.

Victor looked up instantly. His gray eyes softened as they met mine.

"Good morning, Lena. Did you sleep well?"

"Better than I have in five years," I answered honestly, stepping into the library. The room was breathtaking, lined wall-to-wall with leather-bound books, antique globes, and floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the private gardens. "Thank you for... everything. Last night was a blur."

Victor gestured to a chair opposite him. "Sit. Have some tea. You don't need to thank me for doing what should have been done a long time ago."

I sat down, wrapping my hands around the warm ceramic mug. "Why did you do it, Victor? You don't know me. You’re one of the most powerful men in the city, and you risked a massive public scandal just to pull me away from Derek."

Victor walked over, pouring himself a cup of black coffee before taking a seat across from me. He rested his elbows on the table, his expression unreadable.

"You think I acted on impulse?" he asked quietly.

"Didn't you?"

Victor let out a soft, dry laugh. "In my world, Lena, impulse gets you put in a shallow grave before you reach forty. I don't do things by accident."

My heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean?"

Victor slid a single manila folder across the table toward me.

I hesitated before opening it. Inside were dozens of printed photographs, financial statements, medical records, and police incident reports.

My breath caught in my throat.

The documents detailed every single hidden trip to the emergency room over the past three years. X-rays of fractured ribs. Confidential police dispatch logs from our old apartment when neighbors had called about screaming matches. And financial records showing how Derek Hail had systematically embezzled funds from vulnerable investors to prop up his failing real estate portfolio.

"How... how do you have this?" I whispered, my hands trembling so badly I dropped the papers back onto the table.

"I’ve known who Derek Hail is for a very long time," Victor said, his voice dropping into a cold, hard register. "Six months ago, one of my logistics partners tried to launder money through Derek’s firm. In the process of investigating the firm, my security team uncovered his personal life. They found the security footage from your apartment building lobby. They found the medical cover-ups."

Victor leaned forward, his gray eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that burned right through me.

"I watched him destroy you piece by piece, month after month, waiting for the right moment to step in and tear him down completely. Last night at the gala... seeing him put his hands on you like you were nothing more than a piece of trash... my patience ran out."

Tears welled up in my eyes, hot and sudden. "You've been watching me?"

"Protecting you," Victor corrected gently. "From a distance, because I knew if I approached you too early, Derek would take his anger out behind closed doors where my men couldn't reach him. But last night, the game changed."

"And what happens now?" I asked, wiping a tear from my cheek. "Derek won't just let me go. He’ll fight back. He’ll use every corrupt politician and cop in his pocket."

May you like

Victor smiled—not a cold, terrifying mobster smile, but a warm, reassuring curve of his lips that made him look remarkably human.

"Let him try," Victor said softly. "By noon today, Derek Hail won't have a company, a bank account, or a single ally left in this city. His world is collapsing around him right now. And you are finally free."
