Chapter 1 - The Weight of SilverThe silence that followed Victor Salvatore’s kiss was heavier than the crystal chandelier suspended above the Peninsula Hotel ballroom. For three agonizing seconds, the universe narrowed down to a single, explosive point: the terrifying warmth of Victor’s breath against my ear, and the sudden, violent tremor running through Derek Hail’s fingers where they dug into my hip.

"You arrogant bastard," Derek hissed under his breath, his voice strained to a razor-thin pitch of fabricated composure.
Across the room, heads turned. Whispers rippled through the sea of designer gowns and tailored tuxedos like a spark through dry grass. The most feared man in Chicago—a man whose name whispered through boardrooms and back alleys alike—had just publicly claimed the fiancée of an up-and-coming real estate tycoon in front of three hundred witnesses.
Victor didn't blink. He didn't offer a polite apology or a cynical smirk. He simply straightened his dark lapel, his gray eyes locking onto Derek with an unsettling, predatory calm.
"Mr. Hail," Victor said, his baritone voice carrying effortlessly across the quieted floor. "I’ve always believed that precious things shouldn’t be left in careless hands."
Derek’s face flushed a deep, mottled crimson, the white mask of shock giving way to a dangerous, humiliated fury. His hand clenched around my waist so hard that the hidden bruise beneath my ribs flared with white-hot pain. I gasped softly, biting the inside of my lip to keep from crying out.
Victor’s eyes flickered down to my wince. A shadow crossed his sharp features—a micro-expression of pure, cold lethal intent that vanished as quickly as it appeared.
Before Derek could lunge forward and make a scene that would destroy his precious social standing forever, one of Victor’s silent bodyguards stepped smoothly into the gap, a quiet wall of black fabric and immovable muscle.
"Good evening, gentlemen. And congratulations," Victor said smoothly, his eyes lingering on me for one last, lingering second before he turned on his heel and walked away, his guards parting the crowd like water before a ship.
"Lena," Derek muttered, his teeth clenched so tightly his jaw muscles twitched. He plastered a frantic, fake smile back onto his face, leaning down so close to my ear that his breath smelled of expensive scotch and raw venom. "Smile, you little bitch. If you look miserable for one more second, I swear to God I’ll make you regret every breath you take before we even get to the car."
My stomach twisted into knots of pure, unadulterated terror. The terrace doors were just twenty feet away. The private, soundproof world where Derek punished me for breathing too loudly, for looking at another man, for existing outside of his control.

"I... I need to go to the powder room," I whispered, my voice trembling.
"You're not going anywhere except home with me," Derek growled, his fingers digging deeper into my bruised flesh as he began steering me toward the exit with brutal efficiency.
