Chapter 4 - The Revelation in the ICUThe silence inside Room 412 was so profound that the ticking of the wall clock sounded like heavy iron hammer strikes.

Leo froze near the door, his hand hovering over his sidearm, his eyes widening in total, speech-bound shock.

Dante didn't move. He didn't speak. The colour drained completely from his face, leaving his scarred cheekbones looking like carved white marble. His hand remained locked around my forearm, his fingers trembling violently.

"Daughter...?" Dante choked out, his baritone cracking into a high, hollow whisper. "A... a daughter?"

"She was born six years ago at Valley Medical," I wept quietly, tears spilling over my lashes and cutting clean tracks through the exhaustion on my cheeks. "Nine months after you left that note on my coffeemaker. Her name is Mia. She has your dark hair, your crooked smile... and your exact dark brown eyes."

Dante stared at me, his lungs expanding in rapid, ragged gasps as the telemetry monitor began screaming with an elevated heart rate. BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP!

"You... you had my child...?" Dante rasped, his chest heaving as a wave of pure, unadulterated shock and agonizing joy exploded across his severe face. "You raised my daughter alone for six years?!"

"I didn't raise her alone because I wanted to, Dante!" I sobbed, pulling my arm back from his grip. "I raised her alone because her father vanished into the night without leaving a phone number!"

Dante pulled the IV line straight out of his left arm, ignoring the blood that welled along his vein, throwing the heavy white blankets off his broad legs.

"Boss! What are you doing?!" Leo shouted, rushing forward to support his frame as Dante’s feet hit the cold linoleum floor.

Dante staggered, his broad shoulders swaying as three fractured ribs screamed in agony, but he forced his body upright, his storm-dark eyes locked onto mine with an unshakeable, terrifying authority.

"Leo," Dante roared, his deep voice carrying a dark, sovereign power that rattled the glass walls of the room. "I want fifty operators at Claire's apartment in Capitol Hill in three minutes! If a single man belonging to Marcus Vance steps within two blocks of my daughter... execute them!"

"Right away, Don Moretti!" Leo bowed his head frantically, pulling his encrypted satellite phone from his coat as he sprinted out into the corridor.

Dante took two agonizing steps toward me, his hand coming up to gently, reverently frame my face, his thumb wiping my tears away with an unexpected, breathtaking tenderness.

"Forgive me, Claire," Dante whispered into my ear, his breath warm against my skin. "Forgive me for every day I missed. But I swear on my life... no one hurts our daughter."
