Chapter 6 - Building an Empire of My OwnSix months later, the autumn leaves of Central Park turned a brilliant shade of amber and gold, painting Manhattan in the warm, rich hues of a new beginning.

I stood on the wraparound terrace of a magnificent, sun-drenched penthouse overlooking the park—not the old fortress on Central Park West associated with Lucian’s dark legacy, but a brand-new sanctuary I had purchased entirely with my own name, my own capital, and my own vision.

The old Moretti syndicate had imploded within weeks of Lucian’s guilty plea. Without his ruthless oversight, the rival families had engaged in a brief, bloody turf war before federal task forces swept in, arresting the remaining capos and dismantling the New York underworld once and for all. Marco Vitale had taken a plea deal and was currently serving a ten-year sentence in federal prison; Bianca Romano’s father had been indicted on international money laundering charges, effectively neutralizing the Romano family threat forever.

And Lucian?

He was currently residing in a maximum-security federal penitentiary in upstate New York, serving a consecutive twenty-five-year sentence without the possibility of parole. Through Alistair Vance, he had sent me one single letter three months ago—a single sheet of heavy cream paper containing only four handwritten words: You were always the queen.

I hadn't replied. I burned the letter in the fireplace without opening the envelope.

Inside the bright, airy living room, soft classical music played from the speakers. Elena walked out onto the terrace carrying a tray of steaming chamomile tea, smiling brightly as she set it down on the glass patio table.

“You look deep in thought, Your Majesty,” Elena teased gently, wrapping a light cashmere shawl around my shoulders.

I smiled, turning away from the park view to look toward the nursery doors, where a very lively, giggling six-month-old baby boy was currently trying to climb out of his playpen.

“Just thinking about how far we’ve come, El,” I murmured, taking a sip of the warm tea.

Nico was thriving. He had his father’s striking dark hair and sharp jawline, but his eyes—clear, bright, and filled with an endless, untamed curiosity—were entirely his own. He would grow up knowing nothing of guns, syndicates, blood money, or fear. He would grow up knowing that his mother was a survivor who had stared down the most dangerous man in America and walked away with the entire kingdom.

“Alstair called from the office ten minutes ago,” Elena said, her eyes twinkling with excitement. “The foundation’s final incorporation papers have cleared approval. The Serena Sterling Foundation for Single Mothers and At-Risk Families is officially live.”

My heart swelled with a warm, fierce pride.

With the billions of dollars recovered from the liquidation of the Moretti estate, I hadn't just hoarded wealth. I had established a massive philanthropic network dedicated to helping women trapped in abusive, controlling, or financially dependent marriages—giving them the legal resources, financial independence, and safe havens they needed to reclaim their lives, just as my father had secretly prepared me to do all those years ago.

“Good,” I said, setting my teacup down. “Let’s schedule the press conference for next Tuesday. I want the world to know that money taken from shadows can be used to bring people into the light.”
