Chapter 4 - The Masquerade Ball of ShadowsThe quarterly strategic review was a bloodbath of financial spreadsheets and aggressive corporate restructuring, but by 7:00 PM, the conference room had cleared, leaving Dante and Lucia alone in the twilight shadows of the fortieth floor.

The city lights below flickered to life like a carpet of fallen stars, casting long, bruised shadows across the Persian rug.
Dante stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, holding a crystal tumbler of scotch that he hadn't touched in twenty minutes. Behind him, the rhythmic clicking of Lucia’s keyboard finally stopped.
"The eastern port acquisition is signed," she said, her voice carrying clearly across the quiet room. "Arthur Coleman approved the funding allocation five minutes ago. The board is officially off our backs."
"Good," Dante murmured without turning around.
A moment later, he heard the soft rustle of fabric as she stood up. The sound of her heels approached slowly, stopping just a few feet behind his left shoulder.
"Is that all you have to say, CEO?" she asked softly. "After a successful corporate takeover?"
Dante turned slowly. Lucia had removed her suit jacket. Her white silk blouse gleamed softly in the dim light, the top button now undone, exposing the delicate hollow of her throat where the pulse beat rapidly.
"You've been pushing me all day, Lucia," Dante said, his voice low and dangerous as he set his glass down on the windowsill with a sharp clink. "Testing the boundaries. Seeing how far you can bend the rules before I snap."
"I'm not testing boundaries," she replied, taking a slow step toward him, her dark eyes locked onto his. "I'm redefining them. You wanted a fake date to ward off the board. You got a real complication instead. Are you going to deal with it, or are you going to keep hiding behind corporate logistics?"
Dante didn't answer with words. He lunged forward, closing the distance between them with predatory speed, his hands catching her waist and lifting her effortlessly against the cold glass of the window behind her.
Lucia gasped softly, her legs wrapping instinctively around his hips, her arms flying up to lock around his neck as his mouth crashed down onto hers.
It wasn't the desperate, sudden collision of the limousine. It was heavier, darker, and infinitely more consuming. His lips plundered hers with a hungry, possessive mastery that stole the breath right out of her lungs. His hands moved up her back, mapping the curve of her spine, pulling her flush against his chest as if he wanted to absorb her into his very skin.
The corporate office dissolved. The forty floors above the city vanished. There was only the heat of their bodies, the friction of silk and wool, and the overwhelming, intoxicating reality that they had crossed a line neither of them could ever walk back across.
When Dante finally dragged his mouth away, resting his forehead against hers, both of them were breathing raggedly, their chests heaving in the dark.

"You're a menace, Bennett," he murmured against her lips, a rough, ragged edge of amusement touching his voice.
"I told you," she whispered, her fingers tangling in his dark hair, pulling him back down for another bruising, perfect kiss. "I'm executive operations. I optimize your chaos."
