Chapter 4 - The Threat in the ShadowsThe peace inside the corner office was shattered twenty minutes later by a low, urgent chime from Matteo’s private satellite phone resting on the mahogany desk.

Matteo didn't let go of Elena’s hand. He kept his broad fingers firmly interlaced with hers as he stepped over to the desk, pressing the speaker button with his free thumb.
"Speak, Dominic," Matteo commanded.
"Boss," Dominic’s voice came through the encrypted speaker, devoid of its usual calm composure, carrying a sharp, razor-edge urgency. "We have a situation. A secondary surveillance unit belonging to the Moretti family in Chicago was just intercepted outside Elena’s apartment building."
Elena’s blood turned to liquid ice. Her fingers tightened around Matteo’s hand. "The... the Moretti family?"
Matteo’s entire posture changed in a fraction of a second. The gentle, reverent lover vanished, replaced instantly by the sovereign Don of New York whose gray eyes held a lethal, freezing fire.
"What were they doing at her building, Dominic?" Matteo demanded, his baritone dropping an octave into a cold, terrifying register.
"They weren't tracking her for you, sir," Dominic reported flatly. "They saw you leave her building two weeks ago after you brought her home from the hospital when her grandmother was ill. They realized she is your weakness. Victor Moretti’s men were preparing to snatch her tonight to force you to surrender the Brooklyn docks."
Elena gasped, her hazel eyes widening in total, speech-bound horror as she looked at Matteo.
She had spent eighteen months working as his executive assistant, handling schedules, corporate logistics, and legal briefs. She had known he ruled a secondary world in the shadows, but until this exact second, she had never realized how close those dark shadows had hovered to her ordinary life.
Matteo didn't yell. He stood behind his desk like a monument of carved granite, holding Elena’s hand with an unshakeable, protective strength that made the room’s temperature drop below zero.
"Is the Moretti unit secured?" Matteo asked flatly.
"Neutralized and detained in our secondary facility downtown, Don Matteo," Dominic confirmed. "But Victor Moretti knows his men failed. He will move his primary strike team within the hour."
"He won't get the chance," Matteo ordered, every word dropped into the quiet room like a heavy slab of cold iron. "Execute Protocol Alpha. Lock down the Westchester estate. Move Elena's personal belongings from her apartment immediately."
He cut the call, turning around to face Elena.
She stood near the desk, her face pale, her heart hammering against her ribs, looking at the man who had just commanded an underground war with the same calm authority he used for corporate takeovers.
"Elena..." Matteo spoke softly, taking two steps toward her, his dark eyes filled with a deep, genuine concern. "Are you afraid of me?"
May you like
Elena looked into his eyes—looking past the feared Don of New York, past the dark reputation, straight into the heart of the man who had held her hand with trembling reverence just five minutes ago.
"I'm not afraid of you, Matteo," Elena answered, her voice steady, clear, and unyielding as she stepped into his broad embrace. "I'm only afraid of losing you."
