Chapter 7 - The Crown We ChooseThe dust had settled, the federal agents had carted Ruggero and his conspirators away in handcuffs, and the broken front window of Bellini Jewel Restoration had been temporarily boarded up with heavy plywood.

Clara had been reunited with her younger brother, safe and under federal protection, ready to testify against the remaining corrupt elements of Callahan-Romano Shipping.

Inside the quiet workshop, the smell of gunpowder had finally faded, replaced once more by the comforting scents of lavender soap, metal dust, and old velvet.

Alessandro stood by the workbench, leaning against the edge, watching me as I carefully polished away a smudge of soot from my father’s jeweler’s anvil.

“You realize,” Alessandro said softly, breaking the long silence, “that half the Commission thinks you’re a terrifying syndicate queen now, and the other half wants to hire you as their chief strategist.”

I didn't stop polishing. “Good. Maybe next time you want to throw a birthday party, you’ll consult me on the guest list first.”

Alessandro let out a genuine, low laugh—a sound so rare and warm it completely transformed his stern face. He walked over, stopping right beside me, and gently took my hand in his. He looked down at the gold ring gleaming on my finger.

“When I put this ring on your finger two years ago, I thought I was binding you to a cage,” he confessed, his voice dropping into a quiet, vulnerable sincerity. “I thought keeping you separate from the violence of my world was how I protected you.”

I looked up into his grey eyes, seeing the man beneath the armor, the husband who had risked everything to tear down a traitorous syndicate from within while keeping me breathing.

“I was never fragile, Alessandro,” I said softly, sliding my hand out of his grasp just long enough to wrap my arms around his neck, pulling him close. “I just needed a husband who trusted me enough to fight by his side.”

He wrapped his strong arms around my waist, burying his face in my hair, holding me as if I were the only real thing left in a world built on blood and gold.

“Never again,” he whispered against my skin. “From now on, we rule the empire together.”

And as the sun set over the Chicago skyline, casting long golden shadows across the workshop, I knew that the crown we had forged through fire wasn’t a cage at all. It was ours.
