Chapter 6 - The Trap is SetWithin twenty minutes, Marcus and the tactical security team had breached the mansion, securing the perimeter and hauling the unconscious intruder out to a secure holding cell in the basement.

I sat in my private study, cleaning a fresh cut on my cheek with an antiseptic wipe while reviewing the encrypted comms device we had stripped off the assassin. The device was actively syncing data to an external server—a server pinging an IP address registered to Edward Vance’s downtown penthouse.

The puzzle was complete.

Edward had embezzled fourteen million from the foundation, murdered my wife when she discovered the theft, and sent his personal cleanup crew to steal the ledger and eliminate me before the federal audit could trace the funds.

Elise walked quietly into the study carrying a cup of black coffee and a fresh ice pack. She set them down gently on the edge of the desk.

“The girls are back to sleep,” she said softly, leaning against the bookshelf. “Marcus has the doors locked down tight. What are you going to do, Daniel?”

It was the first time she had used my first name without the formal "Mr. Carter." It felt natural, anchoring me in a reality that felt increasingly surreal.

“I’m going to end this,” I said coldly, looking up at her. “Edward thinks he’s won. He thinks I’m trapped in my grief behind these gates. Tomorrow morning, I’m going into the corporate headquarters as if nothing happened. I’m going to call an emergency board meeting.”

Elise’s eyes widened with concern. “He has armed men, Daniel. If he realizes you know about Claire’s ledger, he won't hesitate to strike again in broad daylight.”

“That’s why he won't see it coming,” I replied, standing up and walking over to the window that overlooked the Pacific. “I’m not walking into his trap. I’m walking him into mine.”

The next morning, the sun rose over downtown Chicago, illuminating the gleaming glass monolith of Carter-Vance Global Enterprises.

I stepped out of my helicopter onto the rooftop helipad, dressed in a bespoke charcoal suit, my expression carved from granite. My corporate security detail flanked me on both sides as I took the private executive elevator straight down to the boardroom on the forty-fifth floor.

The board members were already seated around the massive mahogany table. At the far end sat Edward Vance, wearing his trademark oily smile, looking every bit the loyal corporate vice-president.

“Daniel!” Edward boomed, standing up and spreading his arms wide. “Good of you to join us. We were just reviewing the Q3 tech acquisitions. You look... tense. Everything alright at the estate?”

I walked slowly to the head of the table, pulling out my executive chair, but I didn't sit down.

“Everything is crystal clear, Edward,” I said, my voice carrying effortlessly across the silent boardroom.

Edward’s smile flickered for a fraction of a second before he recovered. “I don't follow.”

I reached into my briefcase, pulled out Claire’s original leather-bound ledger, and slammed it down onto the center of the mahogany table with a sharp, echoing thud.

Several board members gasped. Edward’s face drained of all color, his oily facade shattering instantly into pure, naked terror.

“Let’s talk about the fourteen million missing from the foundation,” I whispered, leaning forward over the table, locking my eyes onto my former best friend. “And let’s talk about the brake lines on my wife’s car.”

Before Edward could dive for the door, the heavy boardroom doors swung open.

Federal agents from the Department of Justice, led by a senior U.S. Marshal, marched into the room in synchronized formation.

“Edward Vance, you are under arrest for corporate wire fraud, embezzlement, and federal conspiracy to commit murder,” the marshal announced, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Edward’s wrists as he shrieked and thrashed in protest.

As they dragged him out past the stunned board members, I let out a long, shuddering breath of pure liberation.

The nightmare was finally over.
