Chapter 4 - Secrets in the LedgerMarcus moved swiftly, radioing backup as the stranger turned and bolted toward a waiting sedan parked down the road, vanishing into the coastal fog before security could intercept him.

I stood frozen by the iron gates, my fists clenched so hard my fingernails bit into my palms.

Who was that man? What did he mean by financial records?

My late wife, Claire, had managed our philanthropic foundation and private investments before stepping back to raise the twins. After her funeral, I had immersed myself entirely in my tech conglomerate to numb the agony, leaving her personal estate files locked away in the high-security vault in my home office. I had never once opened her private ledger.

Until tonight.

I walked back into the brightly lit mansion, passing the living room where Elise was quietly humming a lullaby as she put the twins down in their cribs. She looked up as I passed the doorway, sensing the dark storm cloud hanging over me.

“Mr. Carter?” she called softly. “Is everything alright?”

“Fine,” I lied, my voice clipped. “Get some rest, Elise.”

I retreated to my private study, locking the heavy mahogany door behind me. I walked over to the biometric wall safe hidden behind an oil painting of the California coastline. I pressed my thumb against the scanner and entered my twelve-digit master passcode.

The heavy steel door hissed open.

Inside sat Claire’s personal leather-bound ledger, along with a stack of bank statements, offshore trust documents, and correspondence letters dated just weeks before her fatal crash.

With trembling fingers, I pulled the ledger out and sat down at my mahogany desk.

The pages were filled with Claire’s neat, meticulous handwriting. But as I flipped past routine charity donations and household budgets, the entries grew erratic. Notes circled in red pen caught my eye:

“Discrepancy in the primary development fund... 14 million unaccounted for... Cole Industries subsidiary... If Marcus finds out what Edward is doing, our family is in danger.”

My breath caught in my throat.

Edward? Edward Vance was my oldest business partner, my executive vice-president, and the man who had stood beside me at my wedding as my best man. For over a decade, I had trusted him with the inner workings of my entire corporate empire.

Why would Claire’s private ledger link Edward to missing millions and a hidden danger?

I kept turning the pages until I found a folded letter tucked into the back cover. It was addressed to me, dated two days before she died.

“Daniel, if you are reading this, it means I didn't make it home. Edward has been using the foundation as a front to funnel corporate kickbacks. When I threatened to go to the federal authorities, he looked at me and said accidents happen easily on winding mountain roads. Protect our girls. Trust no one.”

The room seemed to spin violently.

The car crash wasn't bad luck. It was murder. And Edward Vance had orchestrated it to cover up his corporate embezzlement.

Before I could even process the full, devastating weight of the revelation, my private office phone on the desk chimed. It was the internal intercom line connecting directly to the second-floor nursery.

I hit the speaker button, my hand shaking.

“Elise? What is it?”

There was no answer for a terrifying moment. Only the sound of static, followed by a muffled scuffle, a sharp gasp, and a click that made my blood run instantly cold.

Someone was in the house.
