Chapter 6 - The Whispers of a New Era

By Friday afternoon, the corporate scandal had leaked to the financial press, sending shockwaves through Wall Street.
“LINTON DYNAMICS SHOCK SHAKEUP: CEO OWEN MERCER OUSTED IN DAWN COUP BY MYSTERIOUS MAJORITY OWNER CELESTE WAVERLY!” screamed the headlines of the financial blogs and morning papers.
Speculation ran wild. Talk show pundits debated whether the sudden collapse of Owen’s leadership would tank the company stock. Wall Street analysts panicked over the abrupt firing of the executive board.
Yet, by Friday closing bell, something extraordinary happened.
Instead of plunging twenty points as Owen had predicted, Linton Dynamics stock rose six point four percent.
Investors, reading between the lines of the internal restructuring memos released by Celeste’s compliance team, realized that the cancerous rot of executive overbilling had been surgically removed. Furthermore, the announcement of a massive reinvestment into frontline warehouse infrastructure and employee welfare signaled a stable, sustainable corporate future built on substance rather than CEO vanity.
At home that evening, the atmosphere in the Waverly brownstone was worlds away from the tense, weeping silence of the previous week.
The kitchen smelled of garlic butter and warm crusty bread. Ivy stood by the island counter, expertly tossing a large bowl of Caesar salad while music played softly from the Bluetooth speaker.
Celeste stood near the stove, stirring a simmering pot of homemade tomato pasta sauce, a faint smile gracing her lips as she listened to her daughter laugh about an inside joke with her art teacher over the phone.
The doorbell chimed softly in the hallway.
Celeste wiped her hands on a dish towel and walked to the front door. When she pulled it open, she didn't expect to see who was standing on her porch.
It was Vanessa Mercer.
The immaculate socialite looked utterly transformed—and completely shattered. Her icy blue designer gown from the gala was gone, replaced by a simple beige trench coat. Her hair was pulled back loosely without makeup, and her eyes were red-rimmed and swollen from days of hysterical crying.
“Celeste,” Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking.
Celeste didn't invite her in. She simply stood in the doorway, blocking the threshold, her expression calm and guarded. “Vanessa. What are you doing here?”
“Owen... Owen packed his bags and left this afternoon,” Vanessa choked out, tears spilling over her lashes as she gripped the wooden railing of the porch. “The police... the federal investigators came by our penthouse this morning with a warrant. They seized our bank accounts, our cars, everything. He’s facing federal wire fraud charges. He could go to prison for ten years.”
Celeste watched her silently. There was no triumph in her heart—only a profound, heavy sadness for how fragile people’s lives became when they built them entirely on smoke and mirrors.
“I didn't know,” Vanessa sobbed, burying her face in her trembling hands. “I swear to God, Celeste, I didn't know what he was doing behind the scenes. And... and I know what I said to you at the gala. I know how ugly I was. I was a monster. I looked down at you because I thought I was better than everyone else in that room. Karma came back and destroyed everything I had in forty-eight hours.”
Celeste looked at the woman who had casually tried to erase her dignity with two manicured fingers under a glittering chandelier just six days ago.
“You didn't destroy your life because of what you said to me, Vanessa,” Celeste said quietly, her voice gentle yet unyielding. “You destroyed your life because you spent years believing that human worth could be measured by what people wore, where they stood, and who they stepped on.”
Vanessa dropped her hands, looking up with raw, broken despair. “Is there... is there any way back? Can Owen make a plea deal? Can Linton Dynamics drop the charges?”
“Linton Dynamics didn't file personal charges; the federal compliance office did,” Celeste replied firmly. “And no, Vanessa. Accountability isn't negotiable.”

Step by step, Vanessa backed away from the door, defeated by the weight of her own arrogance. She turned and walked down the steps into the cool autumn evening, a lone figure swallowed up by the gathering twilight.
Celeste closed the front door, locking it securely behind her.
