Chapter 4 - The War in the BoardroomThe following morning, the storm that had been brewing inside the Reed family spilled over into the public eye.

At 9:00 AM, an emergency meeting of the Board of Directors was convened at the corporate headquarters of Reed Construction in downtown Los Angeles. Evelyn had spent the preceding evening calling senior board members, attempting to rally a corporate coup to have Sebastian removed as CEO on the grounds of mental instability and physical incapacitation.

She had no idea that Sebastian was no longer the broken recluse she had manipulated for twenty years.

A sleek black limousine pulled up to the subterranean entrance of the glass-and-steel skyscraper. I sat in the plush leather back seat wearing an elegant, tailored navy blazer and trousers that Theresa had personally selected for me, with Ethan sitting quietly in his car seat beside me. Sebastian sat across from us, wearing a flawless, custom-tailored charcoal suit. The cold, defeated aura that had surrounded him for two decades was entirely gone, replaced by the terrifying, commanding presence of a man who had reclaimed his birthright.

“Are you ready for this, Mary?” Sebastian asked, looking out the tinted window at the reporters gathered near the main lobby.

“I’m not afraid of her anymore, Sebastian,” I replied steadily, meeting his gaze. “She took thirty years from my family. It ends today.”

Sebastian offered a faint, proud smile—the second genuine smile I had ever seen on his face. “Then let’s go finish it.”

We rode the private executive elevator straight up to the top floor. When the polished doors slid open, the high-stakes tension inside the executive boardroom was palpable. Twelve senior executives and major shareholders sat around a massive mahogany conference table, whispering anxiously among themselves.

At the head of the table sat Evelyn Reed, looking radiant and confident in an ivory suit, surrounded by her legal team.

When the doors opened and Sebastian rolled his wheelchair into the room—accompanied by Marcus Vance, myself, and little Ethan—the entire room fell into a dead, shocked silence.

Evelyn’s smile faltered instantly, her eyes widening in horror as she saw me standing by Sebastian’s side, holding the leather briefcase containing the original police reports and Arthur’s unredacted will.

“Sebastian?” Evelyn stammered, scrambling to her feet. “What is the meaning of this? This is a private executive board meeting! You cannot bring a housekeeper and a child into—”

“Sit down, Evelyn,” Sebastian commanded, his voice echoing off the glass walls with a heavy, crushing weight that made every board member sit up straight.

Sebastian rolled his chair directly to the head of the table, taking his rightful place. Marcus Vance stepped forward, setting a series of legal folders in front of each board member.

“Members of the board,” Sebastian announced, resting his hands flat on the mahogany wood. “You were called here today by my mother under the pretense that I am mentally unfit to lead this corporation. She claimed my grief over my father’s death has rendered me incapable of managing Reed Construction.”

He paused, his cold, piercing gaze locking onto Evelyn, who was trembling violently near her chair.

“What she failed to inform you,” Sebastian continued, his tone dangerously smooth, “is that for twenty years, she deliberately suppressed police evidence regarding the mechanical sabotage of my father’s vehicle to manipulate me into believing I caused his death.”

Gasps erupted around the table. Board members began frantically flipping open the folders Marcus had provided, scanning the red-inked police reports and forensic engineering analyses from twenty years ago.

“This is absurd!” Evelyn shrieked, her face turning crimson. “He’s delusional! He’s suffering from a fever-induced psychosis! Marcus Vance is conspiring with him to—”

“Furthermore,” Marcus Vance interrupted calmly, pulling a second set of documents from his briefcase, “Evelyn Reed systematically executed a multi-million-dollar probate fraud by concealing the existence of Arthur Reed’s legal, primary wife and his legitimate daughter—Mary Flores, who stands before you today.”

The boardroom exploded into absolute chaos. Shareholders stood up, shouting over one another, while senior executives stared at me in utter disbelief.

I stepped forward, setting my hand firmly on the back of Sebastian’s wheelchair, looking directly at the woman who had tried to erase my existence.

“The original will has been submitted to the Los Angeles County Superior Court this morning,” I said, my voice clear and unshakeable. “Fifty percent of the voting shares held by the Reed Estate are legally mine. And as my first act as a primary shareholder, I am seconding Sebastian’s motion to permanently remove Evelyn Reed from the board of directors and freeze all corporate assets allocated to her accounts pending federal fraud investigation.”

Evelyn looked around the table, desperately searching the faces of the men and women she had controlled for years. But every single one of them looked away, terrified of the legal tsunami heading their way.

Her knees gave out, and she collapsed heavily back into her chair, realizing that the empire of lies she had built on a sixteen-year-old boy’s guilt had finally come crashing down around her head.
