Chapter 3 - The UnravelingThe video tribute was a masterpiece of corporate PR. Soft piano music swelled as drone footage of the Children's Heart Hospital played, interspersed with glowing testimonials from grateful parents and dramatic close-ups of Andrew in his surgical scrubs, looking like a literal angel in a white coat.

At table one, Andrew wiped a fake, modest tear from his eye as the audience gave him a standing ovation.
"And now," the MC boomed, "to present the grant and introduce our miracle surgeon, the Chairman and CEO of Carter Foundation—Mr. Ethan Carter!"
More applause. The spotlight swept across the stage, catching Ethan as he rose from his seat.
He didn't smile. He didn't wave.
He walked with slow, deliberate steps toward the mahogany podium, his broad shoulders filling the space with an undeniable, heavy authority. He didn't pick up the prepared speech resting on the teleprompter.
Instead, he looked out over the sea of three hundred wealthy, influential donors, and let the silence stretch for five agonizing seconds.
At our table, Andrew frowned, leaning over to whisper to Senator Collins, "He must be nervous. Ethan hates public speaking."
Ethan cleared his throat. The microphone amplified the sound like rolling thunder.
"Thank you all for coming tonight," Ethan began, his voice deep, calm, and carrying an edge that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. "We raised fifty million dollars for pediatric cardiac care. That money will buy state-of-the-art equipment, fund breakthrough research, and save innocent lives."
A murmur of approval rippled through the room.
"However," Ethan continued, his eyes scanning the crowd before locking dead onto table one, "philanthropy isn't just about writing checks. It’s about integrity. It’s about the character of the individuals we choose to elevate as heroes in our community."
Andrew’s smile faltered. He shifted uncomfortably in his seat, his eyes darting toward the stage.
"Tonight, we planned to honor Dr. Andrew Vaughn as our premier medical visionary," Ethan said, his tone turning glacial. "We prepared a video celebrating his life-saving hands. But true leadership requires us to look beyond the lab coat. It requires us to ask what those hands do when the operating room doors are closed."
The ballroom went dead silent. You could hear the hum of the air conditioning vents.
Up at table one, Andrew stood up halfway, his face turning an unhealthy shade of pale. "Ethan... what is the meaning of this? This is inappropriate—"
"Sit down, Andrew," Ethan commanded, his voice ringing with absolute authority, freezing the surgeon in his tracks.
Ethan reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a standard flash drive, holding it up between his thumb and forefinger.
"Three hours ago," Ethan said, his gray eyes burning into the crowd, "a forensic audit of the hospital's internal complaints database—combined with emergency medical reports from three private urgent care clinics in Manhattan—was delivered to my office. They document a pattern of severe domestic abuse, intimidation, and physical battery."
Gasps erupted from the back of the room. Flashbulbs went off like strobe lights as photographers scrambled to capture Andrew’s horrified expression.
"The perpetrator is a man entrusted with the lives of our most vulnerable children," Ethan’s voice cut through the rising panic. "A man who uses his surgical skill as a threat, telling his victim that no one will ever believe her because he holds the power, the money, and the medical license."
Andrew lunged forward, shouting, "He’s lying! This is a smear campaign! Stop him, security!"
Two massive private security guards hired by Carter Foundation materialized instantly on either side of Andrew, their large hands clamping firmly onto his shoulders, forcing him back down into his chair.
On stage, Ethan lowered his head toward the microphone one last time.
"Carter Foundation is immediately revoking Dr. Vaughn’s grant, terminating his hospital affiliation, and forwarding all evidence to the Manhattan District Attorney's office."

Ethan’s eyes found mine across the crowded, chaotic room.
"And as for the victim," Ethan said softly, his voice trembling with an emotion the whole world could hear, "you are no longer alone. You never have to hide again."
