Chapter 5 - The Family Trap in the VIP Wing“Well, well, well,” Uncle Robert’s voice filled the hospital room, rich, smooth, and dripping with the casual condescension of a man who believed he owned the world. “Family reunions in the middle of the night. How touching.”

Asher stepped in front of the bed, his grip tightening on the heavy steel IV pole until his knuckles turned white. His eyes burned into his uncle’s calm, unblinking face.

“You’re trespassing, Robert,” Asher said, every syllable dripping with lethal intent. “And you’re about thirty seconds away from finding out what happens when security realizes a corporate embezzler and murderer has breached a secure medical ward.”

Robert chuckled softly, stepping further into the room while his guards flanked the doorway, blocking any exit.

“Security, my dear nephew, takes orders from the primary board shareholder,” Robert replied, adjusting his gold cuff links with immaculate precision. “And as of midnight last night, following an emergency quorum vote triggered by your sudden absence from the executive suite, I am the interim Chairman of Lennox Global.”

Asher’s blood ran cold. “You staged a boardroom coup.”

“I saved the company from a compromised CEO,” Robert corrected smoothly, his eyes drifting past Asher toward the bed where Laney was hidden from view behind the mattress frame. “And it seems we have a few other loose ends to tie up. Where is she, Asher? Where is your clever little wife?”

“She’s gone,” Asher lied instantly, stepping wider to block their line of sight. “She left months ago, and you know it. That’s why you’ve been hunting her.”

Marcus stepped around Robert, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the room. He spotted the open duffel bag on the chair, the half-packed baby clothes, and the manila folder resting on the edge of the mattress.

A cruel smile spread across Marcus’s face.

“She’s not gone, Robert,” Marcus said, pointing a finger toward the bed. “Look at the second set of baby monitors on the counter. Look at the extra bassinet. She just delivered twins about twenty minutes ago.”

Robert’s smile vanished, replaced by a dark, calculated coldness. He took two deliberate steps forward, pushing past Asher’s outstretched IV pole with a flick of his hand as his guards surged forward, pinning Asher against the wall and wrenching his arms behind his back.

“Let me go, you bastards!” Asher roared, straining against the guards, his muscles screaming as they forced him to his knees.

Robert ignored him entirely. He walked around the bed, looked down at Laney, who was shielding the newborn baby girl with her body, and smiled thinly.

“Ah, Mrs. Lennox,” Robert said, his voice dripping with false warmth. “You’ve been a very difficult woman to find. If you had just stayed quiet and accepted your allowance like a good little suburban housewife, none of this would have been necessary.”

Laney glared up at him, her eyes burning with a fierce, protective maternal rage. “You killed Asher’s father. You poisoned him just like you’re planning to destroy Asher.”

“Business is a harsh mistress, my dear,” Robert sighed, pulling a sleek, silver-cased flash drive from his vest pocket. “And your husband was always entirely too soft for the top job. Now, I’m going to make this very simple for both of you. You are going to sign a voluntary corporate relinquishment and custody waiver, transferring all residual shares of Lennox Global and parental rights of the children to the family trust administered by me.”

He dropped a set of legal documents onto the hospital tray table.

“And if we refuse?” Laney asked, her voice steady despite the terror in her eyes.

Robert smiled, a chilling, dead-eyed expression that confirmed every nightmare she had lived through for the last seven months.

“Then your husband suffers a tragic, fatal medical emergency right here in the VIP recovery wing—just like his dear old dad. And you and the children... well, accidents happen on foggy San Francisco highways every single day.”

Before Robert could finish his sentence, the door to Room 418 was kicked off its hinges with a deafening crash that echoed through the entire floor.
