Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Dynasty

The silence that followed Brielle’s exposure was heavier than any argument could ever be. It was the crushing weight of utter humiliation.

Arthur Hale was the first to break it, his voice trembling with a terrifying, suppressed fury. He stood up, leaning heavily on his mahogany cane, and glared at his son with eyes cold enough to shatter glass.

"You threw away a good woman," Arthur said, each word deliberate and laced with venom. "You threw away a wife who built this family alongside you from the dirt. You cast aside your own flesh and blood—your daughters—for a lying, manipulative gold-digger who couldn't even keep her own fabricated timelines straight."

"Dad, I didn't know—" Preston began, his voice cracking, his hands outstretched in a pathetic gesture of defense.

"Shut up!" Eleanor screamed, rising from the sofa with trembling hands, her face flushed a mottled, ugly crimson. "Don't you dare speak! Look at what you've done! The entire corporate board is going to hear about this by noon. Our family name, a name we spent a century building with dignity and honor, is going to be the laughingstock of the entire city! And for what? For a cheap, conniving little secretary!"

Brielle pulled the blanket away from her face, her mascara running in black streaks down her cheeks, flashing a sudden, venomous sneer at Eleanor. "Don't you dare talk to me like that, you old hag! Your son was desperate! He was miserable! He begged me to play along because he needed an excuse to get rid of Lena and secure his inheritance from your tight-fisted grip!"

"Get out!" Eleanor shrieked, pointing a shaking finger toward the door. "Get out of my sight before I have security throw you both out into the street!"

Sobbing hysterically, clutching her expensive handbag to her chest, Brielle scrambled off the examination table. She didn't look at Preston. She didn't offer a single word of comfort to the man who had upended his entire life for her. She simply shoved past the frozen medical staff, threw open the door, and bolted down the hallway, her designer heels clicking frantically against the linoleum until the sound faded into the distance.

Preston stood motionless in the center of the room. The fight had entirely drained out of him. He looked around the suite at his parents, who wouldn't even deign to look in his direction, and realized the horrific magnitude of his actions.

He had lost his wife. He had lost his children. He had lost his family's respect, his social standing, and his peace of mind. All for a hollow fantasy built on sand.

With trembling fingers, Preston pulled his phone from his coat pocket. He needed to fix this. He needed to call Lena. He needed to beg for her forgiveness, to promise her that things would change, that we could go back to the way things were.

He unlocked the screen, pulled up my contact card, and hit dial.

Call failed. The subscriber you have reached is not accepting calls from this number.

He tried again. Same automated message.

Panic setting in, Preston opened his messaging app and typed out a frantic plea: Lena, please pick up. It was all a nightmare. The baby... there was no baby. Please, talk to me. Where are you?

He hit send. A little red exclamation mark appeared beside the text bubble.

Preston stared at the screen, his knees suddenly buckling beneath him. He dropped heavily onto the edge of the velvet sofa, burying his face in his hands as the full, crushing reality of his isolation settled over him. He was entirely, irrevocably alone.
