Chapter 5 - The Cornered Animal

Desperate men make sloppy, dangerous mistakes.

On Friday evening, the rain returned to the city in heavy, blinding sheets. I drove back to the suburban villa to pack up Eleanor’s personal belongings—her hand-written journals, her photo albums, and her favorite hand-woven blankets—to donate to the hospice care center I was funding in her memory.

The grand house was dark and quiet. I had given the staff the weekend off to allow myself space to reflect and heal.

I walked into the grand foyer, holding a box of books, setting it down on the entryway table. As I turned to switch on the chandelier lights, a sudden shadow detached itself from behind the curved grand staircase.

The foul stench of cheap bourbon and unwashed clothes filled the hallway.

"Hello, Clara."

I stopped dead in my tracks, my body tensing, though I forced my breathing to remain steady.

Julian stepped into the dim light filtering through the stained-glass windows. He was a terrifying mess. His suit was torn and covered in mud, his hair wild and unkempt, his eyes bloodshot and dark with wild, unhinged desperation.

In his right hand, he was clutching a heavy iron poker from the living room fireplace.

"How did you get in here, Julian?" I asked calmly, keeping my voice low and even, subtly shifting my weight to step back toward the heavy front door. "The security codes were updated two days ago."

"I BUILT THIS HOUSE!" he screamed, his voice cracking, spatters of saliva flying from his lips. "I know every hidden utility hatch in the basement! You took everything from me! My money! My company! My reputation! Chloe locked me out because of your lies!"

"Chloe locked you out because you no longer had a black credit card to pay for her life, Julian," I said, staring directly into his bloodshot eyes. "You destroyed your own life the moment you chose greed and cruelty over loyalty."

"LIE!" he shrieked, taking two violent, unstable steps forward, raising the iron poker into the air. "My mother was insane! You brainwashed her while she was sick! You forced her to sign those papers!"

"She heard the call, Julian," I said, my voice cutting through his frantic shouting like a razor blade.

Julian froze. His raised arm trembled in mid-air. "What... what did you say?"

"The thirty-first call," I whispered, taking a step toward him instead of away, letting my total lack of fear shock him into submission. "When I called you from the ER while your mother was choking on her own blood... your mistress put you on speaker. Eleanor heard Chloe laughing about Maui. She heard the ocean. She heard the champagne popping."

Julian’s eyes widened in sheer, agonizing terror. The color drained completely from his face.

"She died knowing her son was a heartless coward," I continued, stepping closer still, my voice filled with dark, unyielding power. "That tiny silver key she gave me wasn't just to open her safe deposit box, Julian. It was her final act of love for me—and her execution order for you."

"Shut up... SHUT UP!" Julian howled, tears of rage and panic streaming down his filthy cheeks. He raised the iron poker high, lunging toward me with blind, lethal intent.

"POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!"

The heavy oak front doors exploded inward.

Four armed tactical officers, led by Detective Marcus and federal marshals, swarmed into the foyer with heavy flashlights and sidearms trained directly on Julian's chest.

"DROP IT!"

The blinding lights disoriented Julian. He stumbled backward, his hand slipping from the iron poker. It clattered loudly against the marble floor, echoing through the high ceilings.

Before he could run, two marshals tackled him to the ground, slamming his face into the cold stone, pulling his arms behind his back, and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

Julian wept hysterically as he was pinned to the floor, his nose bleeding against the marble. He twisted his head around, looking up at me with pleading, pathetic eyes.

"Clara... please!" he sobbed. "Tell them it’s a mistake! Talk to them! I'm sorry! Please save me!"

I walked over to him slowly, stopping right above him. I knelt down, looking into the eyes of the man who had tried to break my spirit for twenty years.

"I tried to save you for twenty years, Julian," I whispered gently, reaching out to smooth a stray lock of hair from his forehead. "Try having some dignity."
