Chapter 1 - The Weight of a RumorThe amber liquor in Vincent Moretti’s glass barely rippled as the bass from the Velvet Room’s speakers rattled the mahogany table. Around us, the high-end nightclub continued its hypnotic pulse of neon and bass, but inside the shadowy perimeter of the VIP booth, time felt as though it had frozen.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Every instinct I possessed screamed at me to untangle myself from his lap, scramble down the carpeted steps, and run into the cold Chicago rain. But Vincent’s hand remained anchored firmly around my waist—heavy, warm, and utterly unyielding.

“You created a rumor tonight,” Vincent repeated, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made it difficult to draw breath. “And I can use it.”

“I didn’t mean to create anything,” I whispered back, my voice trembling as I clutched the lapels of his tailored black suit jacket for balance. “I just needed three seconds of safety. If you want me to stand up and walk away, I will. Just... tell your guards not to shoot me on my way down the stairs.”

A faint, humorless curve touched the corner of Vincent’s lips. It didn't reach his eyes, but it softened the carved severity of his jawline just enough to remind me that he was human—albeit a terrifyingly dangerous one.

“And where would you go, Nora?” he asked, his voice low enough that it barely carried over the music, yet clear as glass. “Your ex-boyfriend, Cameron, is standing twenty yards away outside the front windows, waiting for you to step into the dark. Your phone is dead. You have eighty-six dollars, no car, and a bus ticket floating in a puddle somewhere near Union Station. You belong to the street right now.”

The blunt accuracy of his words stung more than any slap. He had mapped out my entire pathetic reality in less than two minutes.

“You think because you own the waterfront, you own everyone who stumbles into your path?” I challenged, anger momentarily flaring up to override my terror.

“No,” Vincent replied softly, shifting his weight slightly so that the armed guards lingering at the edge of the booth stepped back into the shadows. “I own opportunities. And right now, you and I have a mutual problem.”

“What problem could we possibly have in common?”

“Public perception,” Vincent murmured, taking a slow sip of his drink. “The city council is voting next week on the commercial zoning permits for the South Side freight terminals. My business partners prefer a man with stability—a man with roots, an established household, a predictable domestic life. They view my bachelor status as a volatility risk. Meanwhile, the city’s gossip columns love painting me as a shadow lord who operates outside society.”

I stared at him, the gears in my sleep-deprived brain slowly turning as the horrifying shape of his proposal began to form.

“You want a prop,” I said, my voice dropping an octave.

“I want an alliance,” Vincent corrected smoothly. “A mutually beneficial fiction. You become the woman who tamed Vincent Moretti, the waitress who captured the untouchable investor's heart. In exchange, Cameron Hale will never come within five miles of you again. My name will shield you, my home will feed you, and absolute security will be yours.”

“And what’s the catch?” I asked, narrowing my eyes. Nothing in the Chicago underworld came without a hidden anchor.

“The catch,” Vincent said, his gaze turning razor-sharp, “is that once you step across my threshold, you play the part completely. No hesitation. No looking back. Because if you walk out of this booth under your own power tonight, Cameron is waiting in the rain. Choose.”

Across the club, through the smoked glass windows, I saw a familiar silhouette pacing near a streetlight. Even from a distance, I recognized the stiff posture and the chilling certainty of Cameron's stance. He believed fear belonged to him. He believed I was his property, temporarily misplaced.

I looked back down at Vincent Moretti—the man who controlled the docks, the man whose mere name had turned my tormentor white with unadulterated dread.

I swallowed hard, forced my trembling fingers to relax against his shoulders, and made my choice.
