Chapter 6 - Reclaiming the PastSix months later.

The morning sun reflected off the crystal-clear, deep blue waters of Lake Tahoe, casting golden light across the pine trees surrounding the Darcy lakeside estate.
The heavy air of neglect and greed that had hung over the property for years was completely gone. Over the past few months, I had undertaken a massive restoration of the property, stripping away Yasmin’s tacky, lavish renovations and restoring the estate to the rustic, elegant haven my grandmother had designed thirty years ago.
I stood on the wide wooden balcony, holding a warm cup of coffee in my right hand. My arm had fully healed; the physical therapy was finished, the strength back in my fingers, leaving only a faint, thin scar along my forearm where the titanium plates had been inserted.
A sleek black sedan pulled up the gravel driveway, and Ana Brennan stepped out, holding a thick leather binder and a bottle of vintage champagne.
"Good morning, CEO," Ana smiled, walking up the wooden steps to join me on the balcony.
"Good morning, Ana," I laughed, hugging her warmly with both arms. "Did the final filings clear?"
"Clean as a whistle," Ana said, setting the binder on the patio table. "The Sacramento apartment complexes have been officially placed into the Abigail Darcy Housing Trust. We’ve converted forty percent of the units into affordable housing for low-income families and women escaping domestic violence."
Tears of pride welled in my eyes. "Grandmother would have loved that."
"She would have been proud of everything you've done, Alana," Ana said softly, handing me a glass of champagne. "The Sonoma agave ranch had its highest harvest yield in five years last month. The board of directors is now made up of ethical, brilliant people who actually care about the business. And the company's stock value has recovered all of its losses."
"What about... the others?" I asked quietly.
Ana took a sip of her drink. "Mark’s first appeal was summarily rejected by the appellate court last week. He will be fifty-two when he is first eligible for parole. Yasmin’s offshore accounts in the Caymans were completely seized by the federal government, leaving her penniless. And Gillian is currently fulfilling her community service hours cleaning public parks in Los Angeles."
I looked out over the serene lake, feeling a deep, profound wave of peace wash over my soul.
For years, I had lived in the shadow of my father’s temper and my stepmother’s cruelty. I had spent my youth trying to make myself small enough so they wouldn't notice me, hiding behind my grandmother’s quiet protection.
I wasn't hiding anymore.
"You know, Ana," I murmured, leaning against the balcony railing, feeling the cool mountain breeze against my face. "When my father raised that bat, I thought my life was over. I thought pain was the only thing I had left."
"And now?" Ana asked softly.
May you like
I looked down at my hand—the same hand that had held the pen, the same hand that had signed the trap that freed me.
"Now I know that pain is just temporary," I smiled, looking up at the endless blue sky. "Boundaries, strength, and truth are forever."
