Chapter 1 - The Trap SnaresThe metallic click of the front door’s heavy electronic lock reverberated through the grand foyer of the Fremont estate.

It was a sound Mark Darcy was too busy celebrating to notice. His face was flushed red with triumphant arrogance, the baseball bat held loosely in his right hand like a conqueror’s scepter. Next to him, Yasmin was frantically flipping through the signed transfer deeds, her manicured thumb smudging the fresh ink of my left-handed, jagged signature.
"Look at this, Gillian!" Yasmin crowed, holding the parchment up to the chandelier light. "The Sacramento properties! The Tahoe estate! All signed over to Darcy Global Holdings!"
"Let me see!" Gillian squealed, stepping away from her phone camera for a fraction of a second to grab the papers. "Does this mean I get the master suite at Lake Tahoe for my birthday party next weekend?!"
"It means whatever we want it to mean, sweetheart," Mark sneered, looking down at me as I lay curled on the marble floor, my right forearm swelling into a purple, broken mass beneath my sleeve.
He raised the bat again, aligning the thick wooden barrel with my left shoulder. "Now, to make sure the doctor’s report matches our story about you taking a tumble down the grand staircase..."
00:00:00.
The timer on my hidden phone expired.
Before Mark could initiate his swing, the grand floor-to-ceiling windows on either side of the entrance shattered inward in a blinding storm of safety glass and wood fragments.
The heavy oak front door was blown entirely off its hinges by a battering ram, the violent thud rattling the crystal chandelier overhead.
"POLICE! FEDERAL MARSHALS! NOBODY MOVE! DROP THE WEAPON!"
A deafening chorus of shouted commands exploded through the living room. SWAT officers in full tactical gear poured through the breached entryways, their assault rifles drawn, red laser sights cutting through the dust-choked air. Four red dots centered instantly on Mark Darcy’s chest.
"Drop the bat! Now! On the ground!" an officer bellowed through a megaphone.
Mark froze, his jaw dropping open in sheer, absolute horror. The baseball bat slipped from his numb fingers, clattering loudly against the marble floor before rolling to a stop right against my knee.
"What is this?!" Yasmin shrieked, backing away toward the sofa, her hands fluttering in terror as three officers moved in to cut off her escape. "This is a private residence! You have no right—"
"Yasmin Darcy! Mark Darcy! Gillian Darcy!" a sharp, stern voice echoed from the doorway.
Stepping through the ruined entrance frame came Ana Brennan, my grandmother’s formidable attorney, flanked by two senior FBI special agents and a team of paramedics. Ana was wearing a sleek charcoal suit, holding a high-definition tablet that was currently displaying a live, crystal-clear split-screen video feed—showing Mark swinging the bat, Yasmin uncapping the pen, and Gillian recording every brutal second with her phone.
"You are all under arrest for aggravated assault, domestic battery, extortion, and grand larceny," Ana announced, her voice as cold as liquid nitrogen. "And thanks to the pin-hole camera pinned to Alana's chest, every word of your extortion attempt has been broadcast live to the Alameda County District Attorney and the FBI Financial Crimes Unit."
Gillian let out a blood-curdling shriek as an officer seized her wrists, snapping heavy steel handcuffs over her hands, forcing her to drop her phone onto the floor.
"Dad! Do something!" Gillian sobbed, her face pale with terror as her designer purse fell to the ground. "They're arresting me! Tell them I didn't do anything!"
Mark was thrown roughly onto the marble floor by two SWAT officers, his face pressed flat against the very tiles where my blood had dripped moments earlier. "Alana, you little bitch!" he roared, struggling against the flex-cuffs binding his hands behind his back. "I'm your father! You trapped me!"
"You trapped yourself, Mark," Ana Brennan said calmly, stepping around him as two paramedics rushed to my side with a gurney.

The paramedics carefully lifted me, placing my broken right arm into a stabilization splint. The agony was blinding, but as I looked up from the gurney, I caught Mark’s eye.
"Grandmother told me to tell you something," I whispered through my cracked lips, my voice steady despite the pain. "She said greed always pays its debts in full."
