Chapter 1: The Slashed Silk and the Obsidian Coat

My white rose bouquet trembled in my hands, slipping from my nerveless fingers and hitting the marble floor with a soft thud as I turned slowly toward the altar. Nathan. The man to whom I had dedicated five years of my youth, my loyalty, and my unconditional love—the man I had promised forever to—did not move a single muscle. He didn't rush forward. He didn't rip off his tuxedo jacket to shield me. He simply stood frozen beneath the towering stained-glass windows, his jaw clenched, silently calculating what this humiliating scandal would cost his family’s corporate reputation and social standing. That was the exact second my heart shattered into a million pieces; I knew with absolute clarity that this marriage had ended long before I ever reached the altar. Out of the corner of my stinging eyes, I caught Veronica—my supposed best friend and maid of honor—pressing a manicured, jeweled hand over her mouth to hide a triumphant, vindictive smile. Only twenty minutes earlier, she had stood behind me in the bridal suite adjusting my veil. "Hold still," she had whispered sweetly while pretending to fix a loose thread on my back. There had never been a loose thread. There had only been a razor blade.

My knees threatened to buckle under the weight of the humiliation as hundreds of strangers watched the worst moment of my life unfold like cheap evening entertainment. Then, a heavy oak chair scraped sharply across the marble floor near the front row. Every single whisper in the cathedral died instantly. Dante Moretti stood up. The entire room seemed to stop breathing. Everyone in Manhattan knew his name and whispered it only when the doors were locked. Officially, he owned luxury shipping lines, five-star hotels, and half the Manhattan waterfront. Unofficially, he was the untouchable king of the underworld—the man even city mayors and federal prosecutors lowered their voices around. Dante walked down the center aisle toward me without haste, his movements fluid and intimidating. Not a single person in the crowded pews dared to block his path or even meet his dark, predatory gaze.

When he reached me, he never once looked down at the torn dress or my exposed skin. Instead, he locked his intense, magnetic eyes entirely into mine, softening his expression just enough to let me know I wasn't alone. "May I?" he asked softly, his voice a deep, resonant rumble. Unable to speak past the suffocating lump in my throat, I gave a tiny, trembling nod. In one smooth motion, he slipped off his heavy, custom black cashmere coat and gently draped it around my shoulders, buttoning it at the collar so it completely shielded me from every cruel, judging stare in the room. Only then did he turn his body around, facing the altar. His dark gaze landed on Nathan, who looked like a frightened rabbit caught in headlights. "You watched this happen," Dante said quietly, the menace in his tone sending a shiver through the stone pillars. Then Dante turned his head toward the bridal party, his eyes settling dead on Veronica. The smug smile vanished from her face instantly, draining every drop of color from her cheeks. Dante raised his voice just enough to echo off the vaulted ceilings, delivering a question that made the entire cathedral freeze in terror: "I'll ask only once. Who cut her dress... before I start asking questions my way?"
