Chapter 1 - The Shadow of the Ashford Throne

The silence in Dominic Ashford’s private study was heavier than the marble floors beneath my feet. It pressed against my eardrums, a thick, suffocating weight that smelled of expensive leather, aged bourbon, and pine. I stood frozen in the center of the vast room, my fingers unconsciously pressing flat against my stomach where three fragile heartbeats were tied to my fate.

Six weeks. That was all it took for my entire life to unravel. One night at the Crane Estate, one stranger with storm-gray eyes and a smile that promised warmth in a world that had only ever offered me drafts and debt. And now, standing across from the man who commanded half of Boston’s underworld and corporate empire, I felt smaller than the $623 sitting in my checking account.

"How do you know that?" I repeated, my voice shaking despite my best efforts to keep it steady.

Dominic didn't blink. He walked slowly around the mahogany desk, his movements measured, predatory, and entirely unhurried. He was wearing a charcoal three-piece suit that fit his broad shoulders with terrifying precision. When he stopped two feet away from me, the sheer proximity of him made my pulse spike.

"I know everything that happens within my orbit, Vivien," Dominic said, his low voice vibrating in the quiet room. "Especially when it involves my blood."

"Your blood?" A bitter laugh escaped my lips, laced with sheer terror and disbelief. "We met once. One night. You didn't even ask for my last name before you vanished into the Boston fog. You don't get to waltz back into my life and claim ownership of my body because of a coincidence!"

"It wasn't a coincidence," Dominic murmured, his gaze dropping slowly from my eyes down to the hands still shielding my flat stomach. A muscle flickered in his jaw. "My men have been tracking your medical appointments since you scheduled the clinic visit forty-eight hours ago. Do you honestly think I would let you walk into a back-alley procedure and erase three pieces of my soul?"

"Back-alley?" I flared up, the defensive anger that had kept me alive through years of working payroll and eating cereal for dinner finally surging to the surface. "It was a licensed clinic! And those 'pieces of your soul' are currently living inside my body, threatening to ruin what little stability I have left! I can't afford a child, Dominic! Let alone three!"

"Money is not your concern anymore," he interrupted, his tone shifting into an unyielding wall of absolute authority. He reached out, his long fingers gently brushing against my wrist, parting my hands away from my stomach. The electric shock of his touch shot straight to my core. "You will never have to worry about rent, debt, or groceries again. You are carrying my heirs, Vivien. That makes you untouchable."

"I don't want to be untouchable!" I pulled my arm back, stepping away from him until the edge of a heavy bookshelf hit my lower back. "I want my life back! I want to go back to my studio apartment in Queens, to my spreadsheet jobs, to my quiet, invisible existence where men like you don't hunt me down like an animal!"

Dominic’s expression darkened, the storm-gray of his eyes turning to slate. He stepped closer, invading my personal space until I had to tilt my head back to look at him.

"The moment you shared my bed at the Crane Estate, your invisible existence ended," he whispered, lifting a hand to gently tuck a stray lock of hair behind my ear. His touch was terrifyingly tender, contrasting sharply with the cold steel in his voice. "You belong with me now. Both of us. All of us."

Before I could scream at him, before I could demand he let me walk out those heavy double doors, the study door swung open without a knock.

A tall woman with sharp blonde hair, cold sapphire eyes, and a tailored white Chanel suit strode into the room. She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw me standing there, disheveled in my oversized coat and sneakers, trapped against Dominic’s bookshelf.

Her lips tightened into a thin, venomous line.

"Dominic," she said, her voice dripping with aristocratic ice. "I trust this... street rat isn't the reason you delayed the board meeting?"

Dominic didn't even turn his head to look at her. His eyes remained locked on mine, but his voice dropped into a register so chillingly lethal that the temperature in the room seemed to plummet ten degrees.

"Watch your tongue, Elena," Dominic warned softly. "You are speaking to the mother of my children."

Elena’s face drained of color, her sapphire eyes widening in horror as she stared at me, and I realized with a sickening jolt that my nightmare had only just begun.
