Chapter 2: The Sister’s Vengeance and the Arrival of the Elite

Even through the static of the hospital speaker, I recognized that voice instantly. It was Elena—my older sister, whom I hadn't heard or spoken to in six agonizing years. Tears broke free from my swollen eyelids, streaming hot across my cheeks. "Elena..." I sobbed, my voice trembling so violently the name was barely audible. On the other end of the line, there was a momentary, breathless pause, followed by a sharp intake of air that sounded like glass shattering. "Caroline? Oh, sweet God in heaven... Caroline, is that really you? Where are you? Tell me where you are right now!" Before I could form another sentence, Luke shoved past the nurse, snatched the telephone receiver out of her hand, and barked into the mouthpiece with venomous authority: "Listen to me, whoever you are—she’s having a psychotic break, she's currently admitted under psychiatric care, and if you ever call this number again, I will have you arrested for harassment!" He slammed the receiver back onto the wall hook, cutting off Elena’s frantic screams, and turned around with a triumphant sneer. "There," Luke hissed, straightening his designer tie. "Your little rescue mission just died."

He underestimated my sister. He had no idea who Elena had become in the six years since he forced us apart. Elena wasn't the struggling college student she used to be; she was now senior partner at Sterling & Vance Corporate Law—one of the most ruthless, high-powered litigation and asset-recovery firms on the East Coast, married into an industrial empire with connections stretching from local police precincts all the way to the state attorney general’s office. Exactly fourteen minutes after Luke hung up the phone, the double doors of the emergency trauma ward swung open with a resounding crash. Four towering, black-suited private security operatives bearing the Sterling insignia marched down the corridor like an elite military unit, clearing the hallway instantly. Behind them strode Elena. She wore a tailored charcoal Prada pantsuit, her sharp, uncompromising facial features set in a mask of cold, unyielding fury, her high heels clicking sharply against the linoleum floor like gunfire.

Luke turned around at the sound of the commotion, his smug smile faltering as Elena marched straight into room 402, flanked by her security detail. "Luke Vance," Elena said, her voice dropping an octave into a register of pure, lethal ice that made the hair on my arms stand up. Luke stammered, raising a hand defensively. "Elena? Look, there's been a misunderstanding—" He didn't even get to finish his sentence. Elena’s hand whipped across his face with a crack that echoed like a pistol shot, sending him stumbling backward against the medical supply cart. "If you ever touch my sister again," Elena whispered, stepping into his personal space with terrifying composure, "I won't just ruin your medical practice and throw you in a cage; I will dismantle your entire existence down to the clothes on your back. Security—escort this piece of garbage out of the hospital before I let my men throw him out the window." Two massive security guards grabbed Luke by the shoulders, lifting his feet entirely off the floor as he thrashed and shrieked in pathetic protest, dragging him out of the room and leaving me safe in the sanctuary of my sister's fierce, unyielding protection.
