Chapter 2 - The Ten-Minute Collapse(Target: 2,000 words - Focus: The phones begin to ring, Apex Global strips the Vance family of everything, and realization dawns.)

The Vance family continued to laugh and chat, ignoring me as I stood dripping wet at the edge of the dining room. But exactly four minutes into my countdown, Ethan’s phone buzzed aggressively.

He glanced at the screen, his expression shifting from annoyance to confusion. "It’s HR from corporate headquarters," Ethan muttered. "Why would they be calling me at 8:00 PM on a Sunday?"

He answered it, putting it to his ear. "Hello? Yes, this is Ethan Vance... Wait, what?" Ethan’s face suddenly drained of color. He stood up so fast his chair screeched against the floor. "What do you mean, immediate termination? For cause? What cause?! I’m the Vice President!"

Before he could get an answer, the line went dead.

"Ethan, what's wrong?" Beatrice asked, her laughter instantly dying.

Before Ethan could answer, Chloe’s phone rang. Then Richard’s phone vibrated violently. Within thirty seconds, all three Vances employed by Apex Global were staring at their screens in absolute horror.

"My corporate credit card just got declined for the quarterly manufacturing order," Richard gasped, his hands trembling. "And... and I just received an encrypted email. My security clearance at the main laboratory has been revoked!"

"Mom! Dad!" Chloe shrieked, looking at her tablet. "My company-issued luxury suite lease... it’s been cancelled! They’re saying my personal belongings will be boxed and sent to the curb by morning! I’m fired!"

"What is happening?!" Beatrice screamed, panicking as she looked at her husband and children. "Ethan, fix this! Call the CEO! Call the board! We own millions in company stock options!"

Ethan was frantically dialing a number, his sweat dripping onto the table. "It’s not going through... none of my contacts are answering... wait." He stared at an official, automated notification that popped up on his screen, bearing the golden seal of the Apex Global Chairperson.

The notification read: By order of the Anonymous Founder and Sole Proprietor, all members of the Vance family are permanently terminated from Apex Global Enterprises, effective immediately. All stock options are voided under the corporate espionage and gross misconduct clause. All corporate-owned vehicles, housing, and stipends are recalled.

"This... this is impossible," Ethan whispered, his knees buckling as he fell back into his chair. "The founder... the shadow billionaire who owns Apex... they’ve never intervened before. Why now? Why us? We are ruined. Without Apex, our family debt will crush us in thirty days!"

I stood in the shadows, a calm, terrible smile spreading across my face. The water dripping from my hair no longer felt cold. It felt like anointment.

"I told you," I said softly, stepping forward into the light of the chandelier.

The family snapped their heads toward me.

"Aria, shut up! We don't have time for your nonsense!" Beatrice yelled, her voice cracking with terror. "We are facing a financial execution, and you’re just standing there—"

"Look at the timestamp on your termination letters, Beatrice," I interrupted, my voice echoing with a chilling authority they had never heard from me before.

Ethan quickly scrolled through the email. His breath caught in his throat. "The order was processed... exactly five minutes ago. At 8:05 PM."

He froze. He slowly looked up from his phone, his eyes widening as he remembered what I had done just moments after the water was poured over my head.

"No..." Ethan whispered, his voice shaking violently. "No, that’s impossible. You're an orphan. You were working at a diner when I met you."

"I owned the diner, Ethan. I owned the land it was built on. And I owned the skyscraper your office is in," I said, pulling a secondary, gold-plated device from my soaked cardigan—the physical hardware key that controlled the entire Apex banking infrastructure. I pressed a button, and the screen flashed with a live ledger balance showing eleven digits.

The dining room fell into a deathly, suffocating silence.
