Chapter 3 - The Gathering StormForty-eight hours later, the tension inside the Blackwood Estate had reached a boiling point.

Julianne stood near the grand fireplace in the main drawing room, forcing a brittle, manic smile as she handed a glass of lukewarm champagne to a local city councilman.

"It’s... it’s an immersive historical experience!" Julianne laughed nervously, her fingers digging so hard into the stem of her glass that her knuckles turned white. "A tribute to my grandfather’s early pioneer days! Truly rustic elegance!"

Councilman Hayes raised an eyebrow, his gaze sweeping over the shivering guests wrapped in fur coats indoors. "Rustic elegance, Mrs. Vance? Half my associates can't even get their luxury cars out of your driveway because the automated gates have completely jammed shut. And rumor has it your corporate accounts have been flagged by the state banking commission."

Before Julianne could scramble for a lie, the heavy oak doors at the entrance of the drawing room swung open with a resounding bang.

Silence fell over the room instantly.

Marcus rushed in, his hair disheveled, his expensive tie loosened around his neck, holding a ringing satellite phone. His face was the color of ash.

"Julianne," Marcus choked out, ignoring the staring crowd of elites. "It’s the bank. All corporate accounts have been frozen under a federal asset-seizure order. They say... they say the original trust has been re-activated by a legal heir."

Julianne’s champagne flute slipped from her fingers, shattering against the marble hearth. The amber liquid splashed across the stone like blood.

"An heir?" Julianne shrieked, losing all composure in front of the city's elite. "There are no other heirs! We purged every single record! Who signed the freeze order?!"

A calm, measured voice echoed from the grand entryway behind Marcus.

"That would be me."

Every head turned toward the doorway. Standing in the soft glow of the candlelight, dressed in a sharp, charcoal-gray bespoke wool coat that commanded absolute attention, was Maya. She didn't look like the disheveled outcast who had been thrown out of the house with a cardboard box just two days ago. She looked like a general walking onto a conquered battlefield.

Flanking her on either side were two federal marshals and Inspector Vance, their badges gleaming coldly in the dim light.

Gasps rippled through the gathered socialites. Phones came out instantly, recording the unfolding spectacle.

Julianne marched across the room, her eyes blazing with blind fury, pointing a shaking finger directly at Maya's face. "You! You little parasite! What kind of pathetic stunt are you pulling? Security! Throw this trespasser out of my house immediately!"

Inspector Vance stepped forward, flashing his shield right under Julianne’s nose.

"Step back, Mrs. Vance," Vance said coldly. "No one is throwing anyone out. In fact, under federal warrant number 88-B, you and Mr. Thorne are currently trespassing on federal property."

Marcus stepped in front of Julianne, trying to salvage a shred of his corporate swagger. "This is a civil property dispute! We hold the deed! We purchased this estate fair and square three years ago from the estate executors!"

"You purchased a falsified title," Maya said smoothly, walking past the frozen crowd until she stood in the center of the drawing room. She pulled a pristine, heavy parchment document from her leather portfolio and held it up. "You didn't purchase the estate from the executors, Marcus. You forged the signatures of the executors after paying off a corrupt county clerk who has already agreed to testify in exchange for a reduced sentence."

Julianne’s face turned from pale to a terrifying shade of mottled purple. "It’s a lie! She’s forging documents! Arrest her!"

"The only one going in handcuffs tonight, Julianne, is whoever resists federal seizure," Maya replied, her voice dropping into an icy register that made the hair on the back of everyone's arms stand up. "You spent three years living in a house built by my family, wearing jewelry bought with embezzled trust funds, and treating the descendants of this estate like servants."

Maya turned her gaze toward the massive stone fireplace, then back to Julianne and Marcus.

"You thought you owned the world because you held the keys," Maya said, her eyes burning with fierce intensity. "But a house is defined by its foundation. And your foundation just collapsed."
