Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the BlueprintThree miles down the valley, far from the gated opulence of the Blackwood ridge, sat an old, abandoned railway depot that Maya had converted into an improvised digital operations center. The air inside smelled of ozone, burnt coffee, and hot server racks.

Maya tossed her duffel bag onto a metal cot and immediately sat down in front of a sprawling triple-monitor workstation. Her fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard with blistering speed. Lines of green hexadecimal code cascaded down the screens as she plugged in a heavy, encrypted hard drive—the very drive Marcus and Julianne had failed to find in her modest quarters.
The Blackwood Estate was not just a historical landmark; it was a technological marvel, modernized by Arthur Blackwood himself before his mysterious disappearance twenty years ago. Every smart-lock, every climate-control vent, every automated security shutter, and every financial asset connected to the estate ran through a centralized, air-gapped server room located deep beneath the mansion’s eastern foundation.
Julianne and Marcus thought they had locked her out by changing the front door keypad. They didn't realize the front door was nothing more than a mechanical illusion.
"Let’s see how long your reign lasts without power, Julianne," Maya murmured, clicking open a master control script labeled Blackwood_Core_Override.exe.
With a single keystroke, she executed a remote ping to the estate’s auxiliary power grid. Across town, deep within the subterranean vaults of the Blackwood mansion, lights flickered. But they didn't turn on—they turned off.
At that exact moment, back at the estate, Julianne was standing in the grand foyer admiring a newly hung Renaissance portrait she had purchased with embezzled corporate funds. Suddenly, the crystal chandelier above her sputtered, emitted a high-pitched whine, and plunged into absolute darkness.
"What in the world...?" Julianne gasped, stumbling backward against the marble console table as the smart-tinted windows instantly locked into their default opaque steel mode, shutting out the morning sun.
Marcus rushed down the curved staircase, adjusting his cuffs, his face flushed with panic. "Julianne! The entire smart-home network just crashed! The climate control is frozen, the security gates are welded shut, and the backup generators refuse to engage!"
"Fix it!" Julianne shrieked, her voice echoing shrilly through the cavernous, darkening hall. "Call the IT contractors! Call someone! We are hosting the regional charity gala in less than forty-eight hours! If the estate looks like a haunted dungeon, our social standing is finished!"
Marcus frantically tapped away at his high-end smartphone, but the screen remained dead, locked behind a flashing system notification that displayed a single, unyielding digital seal: a stark, minimalist tree with deep, intertwining roots—the original Blackwood crest.
Back at the railway depot, Maya watched the live telemetry feeds streaming across her monitors. She saw Julianne’s panicked expression captured by the hidden hallway cameras—cameras Julianne didn't even know existed. A faint, cold smile touched the corners of Maya’s lips.
This was only phase one.
She opened an encrypted communication channel and dialed a contact at the State Land Registry office.
"This is Inspector Vance," a tired, gravelly voice answered on the second ring. "You said you had proof regarding the Blackwood deeds?"
"I have more than proof, Inspector," Maya said calmly, leaning back in her ergonomic chair. "I have the original title deed, signed by Arthur Blackwood in 1968, proving that Julianne Vance obtained her current occupancy through fraudulent notarization and identity suppression. And if you check the corporate registry, you'll find that Marcus has been systematically draining the Blackwood Trust into offshore accounts in the Caymans."
There was a long pause on the other end of the line. Then, the sound of rustling paper.

"My God," Vance whispered. "If this is authentic... they’re looking at federal grand larceny and wire fraud. Where did you get this?"
"Let's just say," Maya replied, her eyes narrowing as she watched Julianne frantically bang her fists against the locked front doors on the monitor, "the foundation always outlasts the tenants."
