Chapter 4 - Whispers in the DarkThree days passed. The tension inside the Carver estate was palpable, like the static electricity before a massive thunderstorm. Daniel had officially severed all business ties with Whitlock Shipping, sending the local economy into a tailspin. Without the Carver syndicate’s protection, the Whitlocks were vulnerable, exposed to both rival mobs and federal investigators.

Hannah’s health had improved under the strict care of Dr. Mercer and Martin’s nutritious meals. She spent her days in the library, looking through old shipping route maps, trying to find any clue Caleb might have left behind.
It was late in the evening when she found it.
She was flipping through a historical volume on the Providence port layout when a small, folded piece of paper slipped out from the binding. It was a receipt from a local marine supply shop, dated a week before Caleb disappeared. On the back, in her brother’s cramped, precise handwriting, was a series of numbers and a single word: Warehouse 14.
"What are you doing up so late?"
Hannah jumped, dropping the paper. Daniel stood in the doorway of the library, holding a glass of amber liquid. He had shed his jacket, and his shirt sleeves were rolled up, revealing strong, muscular forearms.
"I... I was looking for anything Caleb might have touched," Hannah said, picking up the paper and handing it to him. "Look at this."
Daniel took the paper, his eyes scanning the numbers. "These aren't coordinates. They're security override codes for the old harbor district. And Warehouse 14 is an abandoned dry dock owned by the Whitlocks."
He looked up, his expression hardening. "This is where he was keeping the backup ledgers. Or where they are keeping him."
"I want to go with you," Hannah said immediately, stepping forward.
"Absolutely not," Daniel countered, his voice firm. "It is dangerous. The Whitlocks are cornered beasts right now, Hannah. Thomas is desperate, and Claire is furious. They will do anything to claw back their leverage."
"Caleb is my brother!" Hannah pleaded, reaching out to grasp Daniel’s forearm. The muscles beneath his skin tightened at her touch. "He is the only family I have left, besides this baby. Please, Daniel."
Daniel looked down at her hand on his arm, then up at her face. Her eyes were filled with a fierce determination that defied her fragile appearance. A strange, unfamiliar emotion flickered in the depths of his cold eyes.
"You stay in the car," Daniel commanded, his voice softening just a fraction. "Under heavy guard. If there is a single sign of trouble, my men will drive you back to the estate. Do you understand?"
May you like
"Yes," Hannah whispered, relief flooding through her. "Thank you, Daniel."
He stepped closer, his hand rising to gently brush a stray lock of her cut hair behind her ear. His touch was warm, lingering against her skin. "I lost my family young, Hannah. I know what it means to fight for the people who belong to you. I won't let you lose yours."
