Chapter 5 - The Exile of Brittany AdamsWhile Michael sat in his hollowed-out penthouse apartment facing impending financial ruin and federal indictment, Brittany Adams was experiencing a much faster, more brutal descent back into reality.

Thirty blocks away from The Plaza, inside a cramped, sunless coffee shop on the Upper East Side, Brittany sat staring at her phone screen with tear-streaked eyes and smeared mascara.

Her corporate email account: permanently deactivated.

Her company-issued laptop: confiscated by federal investigators.

Her luxury apartment lease: flagged by the landlord’s legal team for non-payment after her corporate-subsidized stipend checks bounced.

And worst of all—the man she had traded her professional integrity for had completely ghosted her. When she tried calling Michael from a burner number twenty minutes earlier, his phone went straight to voicemail. The moment he realized she was just as legally radioactive as he was, his desperate affection vanished like smoke in the wind.

A shadow fell across her small laminate table.

Brittany flinched, looking up, expecting a building manager or a process server.

Instead, a tall, elegantly dressed woman with sharp sunglasses and an impassive expression stood before her. It wasn't me. It was one of Ryan’s associates—a private legal courier named Jessica.

"Miss Adams?" Jessica asked, her voice clipped and professional.

"Wh—who are you?" Brittany stammered, pulling her designer handbag defensively against her chest—the very bag Michael had purchased using the fraudulent Apex Creative Solutions corporate account.

"My name is Jessica. I represent Claire Carter," the courier replied smoothly, tossing a thick manila envelope onto the table right beside Brittany's half-eaten scone.

"What is this?" Brittany whispered, her hands trembling as she touched the edge of the envelope.

"It is a formal notice of civil litigation," Jessica stated calmly, pulling out a small tablet to record the service of process. "You are being sued individually by Mrs. Carter and Carter Global for tortious interference, commercial fraud, conversion of corporate assets, and intentional infliction of emotional distress."

Brittany’s breath hitched. "Sued? But... but I didn't steal anything! Michael gave me those things! He authorized the budget!"

"The forensic audit proves that you knowingly conspired with an executive officer to divert corporate capital for personal enrichment, falsifying vendor invoices in the process," Jessica explained with clinical detachment. "That is a Class B felony in the state of New York, carrying a potential prison sentence of up to seven years, alongside civil damages totaling four hundred and fifty thousand dollars."

Seven years in prison.

The words echoed in Brittany's ears like a tolling bell. The glamour, the luxury penthouse parties, the designer clothes, the illusion of power—it had all collapsed into a nightmare in less than twenty-four hours.

"I want to talk to Claire," Brittany choked out, tears spilling over her eyeliner. "Please! Tell her I'm sorry! I didn't know she would destroy us like this!"

"Mrs. Carter is far too busy finalizing her corporate restructuring to speak with you," Jessica replied coldly. "You have forty-eight hours to retain criminal defense counsel before the District Attorney files formal charges. Have a pleasant afternoon, Miss Adams."

Jessica turned on her heel and walked out of the coffee shop, leaving Brittany alone in the sterile fluorescent light, staring at the legal summons that signaled the absolute end of her ambitions.
