Chapter 2 - The Forty-Second Floor PanicForty floors above Manhattan, the executive boardroom of Carter Global felt like a freezer operating at zero Kelvin.

Michael Carter sat at the head of the massive, custom-built walnut conference table, his knuckles white as he gripped the edge of the polished wood. Sweat beaded along his hairline, staining the collar of his custom-tailored charcoal suit.

Standing opposite him was Arthur Vance, the sixty-eight-year-old Chairman of the Board, whose silver hair and icy blue eyes had terrified executive aspirants for decades. Between them lay a printed hard copy of the email I had scheduled and dispatched at precisely 9:00 AM.

"Care to explain this, Michael?" Arthur’s voice was dangerously quiet, cutting through the heavy silence like a razor blade.

"It’s... it’s a malicious fabrication, Arthur," Michael stammered, his voice cracking slightly as he forced a strained, unconvincing laugh. "My wife... Claire and I are going through a difficult personal separation. She’s emotional, she’s vindictive, and she’s weaponizing forged screenshots and hacked photos to sabotage my position before our upcoming shareholder meeting—"

"Forged?" interrupted Sarah Jenkins, the head of Corporate Legal, tossing a thick red folder onto the table right in front of Michael. "Mr. Carter, let’s talk about forgery. The internal audit team pulled the financial ledgers for the Q2 marketing discretionary fund thirty minutes ago. Sixty-four thousand dollars was funneled through a fictitious vendor account named Apex Creative Solutions—an LLC registered in Delaware last month using a residential address matching an apartment leased in Astoria under Brittany Adams's name."

Michael’s face drained of all color. He looked like a man who had just been kicked squarely in the chest.

"That... that was an oversight," Michael bumbled, his hands trembling as he tried to shuffle the papers. "A vendor accounting error—"

"An accounting error that coincidentally paid for Miss Adams's lease, three Chanel handbags, and a weekend getaway at the St. Regis in Aspen?" Sarah countered coldly, leaning over the table. "That’s not an accounting error, Michael. That’s grand larceny and wire fraud using corporate capital."

Before Michael could formulate another desperate lie, the heavy oak boardroom doors swung open.

Brittany Adams stood in the doorway, her hair slightly disheveled, her designer blouse wrinkled, and her eyes wide with unadulterated panic. She had just been hauled out of her cubicle on the twenty-sixth floor by two burly corporate security guards.

"Mr. Carter! They—they locked me out of my terminal!" Brittany cried, rushing toward the table, completely misreading the glacial atmosphere of the room. "Tell them to let me back in! Someone hacked my email and sent crazy lies to the entire board about us—"

"Shut your mouth, Brittany," Michael hissed, his voice dropping into a venomous snarl as he realized the catastrophic extent of her public arrival.

"Oh, she doesn't need to shut her mouth, Michael," Arthur Vance said smoothly, settling back into his leather executive chair and lacing his fingers together. "In fact, Miss Adams can stand right there and explain why her company-issued laptop contains encrypted chat logs detailing how she and the CEO planned to liquidate company stock options to fund their private relocation to London once the merger finalized."

Brittany froze, her mouth hanging open. She looked from Arthur to Michael, finally registering the terrifying reality: they weren't just investigating an office romance. They were dissecting a criminal conspiracy.

"The Board has convened an emergency vote," Arthur announced, checking his gold-plated pocket watch with chilling indifference. "Effective immediately, Michael Carter is suspended from his duties as Chief Executive Officer of Carter Global, pending a federal forensic audit and a criminal referral to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for corporate embezzlement."

Michael leaped to his feet, knocking his heavy executive chair backward onto the hardwood floor with a deafening crash.

"You can't do this!" Michael roared, veins bulging in his neck. "I built this company! I took us public! You're destroying everything over a personal dispute with a bitter wife!"

"This isn't about your wife, Michael," Arthur said, his eyes narrowing into cold, unyielding slits. "This is about the fact that you thought you could use a multi-billion-dollar corporation as your personal harem and slush fund. Security, escort Mr. Carter and Miss Adams out of the building. Do not allow them to touch their desks, their computers, or their phones."

As four security guards moved in with grim determination, Michael stared wildly around the room, realizing with horrifying clarity that his career, his wealth, his reputation, and his freedom had evaporated in less than an hour.

And somewhere out there in the city, the woman he had underestimated was calmly sipping champagne.
