Chapter 5 - The Trap at the Docks

Three days later, Luca’s net finally closed around Marcus Vance.

They didn't find him at a safe house or an airport. They found him hiding in an abandoned shipping container down at our private freight docks in Red Hook—the very shipping lanes I had built from the ground up.

By the time my sleek black sedan pulled up to the warehouse, the rain was pouring down in sheets, mimicking the miserable weather from the night Isabelle died.

Luca and two enforcers dragged Marcus out of the container and threw him onto the wet concrete. His designer suit was ruined, his face bruised and swollen, and his eyes wide with absolute, primal terror as I stepped out of the car.

I walked slowly through the puddles, my heavy leather boots splashing against the ground. I didn't pull my gun. I didn't need to.

“Dominic—please—listen to me,” Marcus choked out, spitting blood onto the pavement as I stopped in front of him. “It wasn't personal! It was business!”

I crouched down until we were eye to eye. The rain soaked through my coat, but I didn't feel the cold.

“Business,” I repeated, my voice a low, lethal hum. “You killed my wife. You terrorized my children. You broke into my home while I was out protecting the very empire that kept you rich.”

“The syndicate was getting soft!” Marcus cried, grabbing my coat sleeve with trembling fingers. “Isabelle found out about the offshore accounts! She was going to tell you everything and walk away with the girls! She was going to destroy you, Dominic! I did it to save the family!”

I looked at him—this man I had trusted like a brother, whose children I had sponsored, whose loyalty I had never questioned.

“You didn't save anything, Marcus,” I whispered.

I stood up, stepping back as Luca and the enforcers moved in.

“Keep him alive,” I ordered coldly over the sound of the crashing waves and pouring rain. “Bring him to the basement of the Long Island estate tonight. I want my daughters to know the monster is caught. And then, I’m going to make sure Marcus Vance wishes he had never been born.”
