Chapter 4 - The Trojan HorseBy midnight, the lights in the temporary command center Claire and Sarah had set up in their Beacon apartment were burning at maximum wattage.

Piles of printed spreadsheets covered every square inch of the kitchen table. Empty coffee cups littered the floor. Lily was fast asleep in the back bedroom, blissfully unaware that her mother was orchestrating the dismantling of a multi-million-dollar empire.
“It’s not enough,” Sarah groaned, rubbing her burning eyes as she stared at her laptop screen. “Malcolm Reed has every judge in the county in his pocket. Even if the Attorney General issues an injunction by noon tomorrow, Julian’s emergency board meeting starts at 9:00 AM at the estate. They can push the vote through before the paperwork even hits the fax machine.”
Claire stood by the window, watching the distant headlights of trucks crawling across the highway bridge in the rain. Her reflection in the glass looked tired, but her eyes burned with absolute clarity.
“We aren't going to stop them with paperwork, Sarah,” Claire said quietly.
Sarah looked up, her expression alarmed. “What are you talking about? You’re not planning on going back to the estate, are you? Julian filed a restraining order this afternoon. If you step foot on that property, the local police will arrest you on sight.”
“I’m not going back to beg,” Claire turned around, walking over to the metal lockbox on the counter. She reached beneath the false bottom of the box and pulled out a small, heavy black leather pouch.
Inside was something Sarah had never seen before: an encrypted hardware token bearing the master administrative key to the Harrow & Sons internal network—a backdoor key her father had coded into the company servers fifteen years ago, before he was forced out.
“Dad never expected to win in their courts,” Claire said, her voice steady. “He knew that men like Malcolm Reed and Evelyn Harrow only understood leverage when it hit their bottom line.”
Sarah’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Claire... that token gives you root access to every digital asset, bank account, and smart-lock system across the entire Harrow corporate infrastructure. If you execute a remote override from outside the firewall, it’s classified as a federal cyber intrusion under the Patriot Act. If you get caught—”
“I won't get caught,” Claire interrupted, sliding the token into her pocket. “Because I’m not doing it remotely. I’m doing it from inside the boardroom.”
Before Sarah could argue, a sharp knock echoed at the apartment door.
Both sisters froze. It wasn't the police knock—it was too soft, too rhythmic. Three taps, a pause, two taps.
Claire walked cautiously to the door, peering through the peephole.
Standing in the dimly lit hallway was Julian.
He looked disheveled. His tie was missing, his hair was messy, and the expensive wool coat he wore was drenched from the rain. He looked terrified.
Claire unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open just a few inches, keeping the security chain latched.
“What do you want, Julian?” Claire asked coldly.
Julian stared at her through the narrow gap, his chest heaving as he tried to catch his breath. “Claire... you have to stop. Mother has lost her mind. She’s locked herself in the master vault with Malcolm Reed, burning physical records and transferring every remaining cent to offshore accounts before the board meeting tomorrow. If you don't back down, she’s going to pin the entire embezzlement scheme on you.”
Claire let out a harsh, bitter laugh. “Pin it on me? For what? Protecting my daughter from being assaulted at a society gala?”
“For being the primary trustee of the estate’s secondary holding accounts,” Julian pleaded, pressing his palm against the doorframe. “Claire, please. Come home. We can fix this quietly. Just sign the non-disclosure agreements, hand over the documents your sister stole, and Mother will drop the custody challenge.”
Claire stared at the man she had loved for eleven years—the man who had watched her get shoved against a marble console and chosen his mother’s approval every single time.
“There is no home left, Julian,” Claire said softly. “Tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM, I’m walking into that boardroom. And I’m going to watch your empire burn to the ground.”
May you like
She slammed the door in his face, sliding the deadbolt home with a final, echoing click.
Outside in the hallway, Julian’s fist slammed against the wood in impotent rage, but Claire didn't flinch. The battle lines were drawn, and morning was coming.
