Chapter 5 - The Corporate RestructuringThe transition of power at the Mercer hotel empire—now rebranded under Blackthorn Holdings—was hailed by financial journalists as the most aggressive corporate restructuring in the history of the Midwest.

The board of directors had been entirely purged. Executive officers linked to Vivienne and Julian’s embezzlement schemes had been indicted, fired, or forced into early retirement. A new wave of leadership was ushered in, prioritizing ethical labor practices, transparent compliance audits, and full accessibility compliance across every single property in the luxury chain.
On a bright Tuesday morning in November, I stood at the podium in the grand ballroom of the flagship Mercer Crown Hotel—the very room where my undercover assignment had begun fourteen months prior.
This time, the room wasn't filled with arrogant socialites drinking expensive champagne. Instead, the seats were occupied by hundreds of hotel employees, housekeeping staff, union representatives, and advocacy leaders for workplace rights.
As I adjusted the microphone, a warm, thunderous wave of applause echoed off the marble pillars.
I looked out across the crowd, spotting Naomi sitting in the third row, beaming proudly alongside several other staff members who had risked their jobs to help me uncover the truth.
"Thank you," I began, my voice clear and resonant. "Fourteen months ago, I walked into this hotel under false pretenses. I wore a disguise of vulnerability, testing whether an institution built on luxury possessed the basic human decency to care for those it considered powerless."
A quiet hush fell over the room.
"What I discovered during my time here was a culture of institutional cruelty—a system designed to silence victims, cover up injuries, and protect the privileged at the expense of the vulnerable," I continued, holding my head high. "Some believed that power meant intimidation. Some believed that wealth made them untouchable. But today, we are proving that transparency, accountability, and justice are far more powerful than any family name or corporate dynasty."
The applause that followed was deafening. People stood up across the ballroom, clapping and cheering, their faces lit with genuine hope for the future.
As I stepped down from the podium, Marcus Vance was waiting in the wings with a sleek leather briefcase and a warm smile.
"Well, Madam Senior Director," Marcus chuckled, handing me the final signed restructuring documents. "You certainly know how to make an impression at a company meeting."
I laughed, tucking the briefcase under my arm. "I believe in thoroughness, Marcus. When you do an audit, you make sure every stone is unturned."
"Indeed," Marcus agreed, glancing toward the grand entrance where the hotel’s new plaque—bearing the Blackthorn Holdings crest—was being polished by staff members who were finally being paid fair wages with full medical benefits. "What’s next on your agenda? Rumor has it the European division is looking for a top-tier compliance director to clean up a messy hotel chain in Zurich."

I smiled, feeling the crisp November air brush against my face as I walked toward the exit, stepping confidently into the bright, unclouded afternoon.
"Let's start closer to home," I said, stepping into the sunlight. "There are still plenty of floors left to clean."
